Trevor's Trek - Machu Picchu Challenge 2001

Excuse me, tour guide ... what's that thing over there with the two yellow arches? And by the way, pass me another donkey, this one's dead

Those of you who have spent leisure time in the company of the inimitable Trevor Kay-Russell will know that if there's a mountain in the way, he'll go over it, rather than around it. Show him a peak, and he's up it. Many a landing party from "Shearwater" has started setting up the barbeque on some deserted beach only to see JTKR's heels bolting through the bracken straight up any handy hillock. Or, in most cases, volcano. Put it this way, he's known for it. So it comes as no surprise to receive this announcement:

"Some of you may have heard of the Mission to Seafarers fund raising expedition to Peru later in the year.

Trevor Kay-Russell has signed up for this, leaving on 20th October. The object is to raise sufficient funds to support a Chaplain in one of the mission ports for a year with each participant committing to raise at least 2500 pounds in sponsorship.

The expedition lasts for two weeks, including a trek across the Andes on the old Inca trail to Machu Picchu. This will include camping at high altitudes in bleak and barren places with, as can be expected, a total absence of pubs, topless bars and other creature comforts. The price of such charitable works is not light!

Trevor is planning to pass the begging bucket around at Portsmouth but if you are not going to be there and would like to help justify his ordeal with a soothing contribution, please free to send something in.

All forms of exchange would be gratefully accepted, bearer bonds, gold bullion, wife's jewellery, used bank notes. However, cheques would be preferable, either made out to the Mission to Seafarers, or to Trevor Kay-Russell and sent to him at:

7 Lower Sand Hills, Surbiton, Surrey KT6 6RP

Thanks in advance for your support."

Believe it or not, later this year he's also going "part of the way" across the Atlantic on David Walker's yacht. Part of the way? Knowing Trevor, he'll probably swim the rest.

Yam Sing, Machu Man. We're (a long way) behind you.
