Ship's Log Entries 2005
2005 was a year of frenetic activity for members of the SMA. Why, some even got out of bed in the morning. Others, inspired no doubt by the eloquent prose that is so typical of contributions to this log, let inhibitions go and pressed their own pen to paper; or rather, digit to desktop.
Keep it coming, chaps!

I have been holding back waiting for Stu yto be first on the list but he seems to have gone into hibernation. Anyhow, a Happy and Prosperous New Year to one and all.

The web-brat apologises for not yet having put up the 2005 Visitors Book; he is travelling and will not be able to undertake this until his return to the US of A. Even then, it may take a little while, as his office has exploded in his absence (hot water pipe = hot water and steam = uh oh, and so every piece of equipment and every item in the room is totally ruined. Three computers, printers, cameras, everything. Not to mention the curly floorboards. Thus all 2005 entries made here will be moved across to the new page in due course. Due course being some time off, perhaps. Happy New Year, all!

Sorry I'm late with this, I was waiting for Mark to put up the 2005 log page but
After having read that last message, oh what a disaster and a terrible way to start a new Year for our web brat.

No such luck, Maurice, just borrowed a laptop, that's all. Not so much a matter of mopping up as totally rebuilding, I'm afraid. All floors, walls and ceilings in the two rooms most badly affected have now been stripped out; I have a large portable storage unit in my front drive for stuff that may have survived, a tarpaulin covered pile on the back deck of stuff that might just possibly be recoverable and, largest of all, a massive skip in the road in front of my house which is full of the things that definitely did not survive. And all this from two rooms. Makes the devastation of Bandar Aceh all the more mind-boggling. Poor people - MAJB

A Very Happy New Year to all!
Sympathies from all in our family to Mark for his misfortune!
Dislike forwarding the following but feel anybody who is familiar with Yokohama would wish to be informed of this shocking event last week!
Nagako and I were married in Christ Church as were Dudley and Ann Groves.
The JT article speaks for itself but I will add that Miller was an International School student in my son's class until he was expelled and he has a history of instability.
Landmark church gutted; parishioner held
YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) Police have arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of burning down a historic church here Tuesday night.
Firefighters look on as Yokohama Christ Church in Naka Ward burns to the ground Tuesday evening.
The suspect was identified Wednesday as Douglas Masaru Miller, a U.S. citizen who grew up in Japan. He turned himself in to police about 90 minutes after setting the fire. The Rev. Yasunobu Okano, 55, suffered light burns on his hands.
According to an investigation, Miller allegedly set fire to Yokohama Christ Church in Naka Ward around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday. The three-story concrete structure, which covered an area of about 456 sq. meters, burned to the ground.
Miller, a resident of Yokohama, admitted setting fire to envelopes and other items left in a room of the church. He said he has no idea why he did it, police said.
Miller apparently regularly attended services at the church, which represents an English-speaking Anglican congregation.
The latest structure, rebuilt in 1931 after the Great Kanto Earthquake and restored after being damaged during an air raid in World War II, was located across the street from the Foreign Cemetery, a popular sightseeing spot.
Yokohama had designated the church as a historic building for retaining the atmosphere of the city since its port's opening to foreign vessels.

Very sad to see the message about Christ Church in Yokohama as Miki and I were married there, many moons ago, with Tim Bridgman as best man.
Many happy memories when looking back at the documents and seeing the names of Torii-san and Samakawa-san as my sponsor, and photos of dear old Fukanaga-san as chief toast master at the reception!
Best wishes to all.

Greetings all. Now on leave for 6 weeks and can put finger to keyboard. I worked New Year and think it was the first time since I was about 15 that I didnt see in the New Year. . Hope that 05 brings good fortune to us all. For you Mark the year just has to improve, that is the only upside of having such a major mishap.
Like many people round the world we have been doing our little bit to raise funds for "shelter Boxes" that are put together by a Rotary Club in the West Country to send out to regions affected by tsunami.
Re the book "In Coral Seas" it has been produced under the banner of the Nautical Association of Australia Inc. Mike Caroline is Pres. Mike sailed with me in Shansi in 66. when I was Mate. There is a lot of good reading especially if you have ever been on the NGAL. Lots of tails were NOT told , for my sake more that anyone else!!!!!!!!. I believe from Mike Caroline that Swires have taken a good number of books so it might be best for SMs to contact London as first contact. Mike is thinking of going to the Aust Reunion this year and he will have some copies with him. There is a great picture of Daddy's Yatch one of my happiest Commands --- The good ship New Guinea Chief on the cover. Thank God baulkheads dont talk. I am still working for another 2-3 years, or till a 0300 call is not acceptable. Staying close to home this leave, but off to Eastern Canada in Aug.05. Remember always a bed at Coombe House Mt. Eliza if you are heading to Aus and Melbourne . Oh look at that 1200. time for a GT Cheers folks.

Sad news from Australia chaps.
For those who knew Dave Laurie, ex deck officer from the "Chief" ships and later in the 1970s as stevedore on the Sydney waterfront, please be aware that sadly, he has passed away of prostate cancer. Regret that no more details are available but if you know any more, please post the information here on this site.
Also, sadly heard from Brisbane Australia that Phil Eamer is suffering from motorneurone disease. We can only wish him the very best of luck and our thoughts will be with him.
I personally don't know either of the above gentlemen but I am sure that some of you out there do.

This is seriously distressing news, Stu; but thanks for posting. I knew Tim was ill, but I did not realise how progressive his MND had become. I was lucky enough to work (if you can call it that) under Tim at CNCo HK in the mid-80s, with James Hughes-Hallett (now THAT name rings a bell ...) as Commercial Director and they were exciting days full of ideas and innovation. And beer. Later, I could never step ashore in Japan without an invite from the top floor in Tokyo to take ale somewhere convenient. I even got a curry out of Tim and Hilary in New Jersey once. Tim, we'll miss you, we really will. Now, I'm off to have a beer for you. Twelve, perhaps.

Aha, that's two votes, then. Terry had a message from Leo MacGowan, who lives in NZ, who thought that it might be the Chekiang. He had served as 1st Mate in her. Below, find a piccie of the 'Chekiang' and a snap of the cover of the 1960 B&S bible from which it was taken, just so that you can remember what Hong Kong looked like before the builders arrived - MAJB

May 29, 2005 - 22:43 -
I am reliably informed from an undisclosed source, it recently having had a stroke, that the "Madang" picture looks more like Rabaul, taken from town, and that the ship is either Chekiang or
Chefoo.

Terry further writes: "I have attached a photo of the Soochow at Rabaul, indisputably.
Comparing the steepness of the hillside near to the wharf, there can be little doubt that the photos were taken at different ports and as
the Madang picture is in the sequence of other Madang pics, I am certain of my description. Barry Gant was Second Engineer". Well, it's clear that Barry wasn't sailing Chief, for sure; his boiler suit is dirty - MAJB

It was sad to read of the death of Bill Jeffrey. I remember well when Bill broke both ankles jumping down number two hatch of a C boat discharging sugar at Hong Kong. I was at school? taking Mates, and the ship was on fire at Taikoo sugar wharf. Bill saw the sugar loaded and it was all soft and nice, but on the voyage it had developed a hard crust. Anyway Bill was in Hospital but got let out from time to time and I well remember being in 'Skinnys' at some stupid early hour when through the door came Bill on crutches, looking for the last gin before returning to the Canossa Hospital. He fell over, and we got him back in terrible condition and the Nuns were unhappy. Happy memories

Around 1961 I was 3/E and Bill Walshe (with the "e")was 2/E on the CHEFOO tied up at the Taikoo Sugar wharf. The fire as mentioned by Mike Tidey, started in the copra stowed in the tween deck with sugar in the main hold. Bill Jeffrey jumped down from the hatch and landed on the compacted sugar breaking both ankles. The c/o Mr.Langdon had already gashed his hand when breaking the glass to get to a fire hose. When more fire main press. was requested the fire team lost control of the hose which was probably what put the fire out. Meanwhile the Capt.was returning from downtown when his taxi was passed by the Fire Brigade and assumed the Emergency was somewhere out in Shaukiwan. Ultimately we were thanked by Adrian Swire for our prompt action in extinguishing the fire!!

Cyril Osborne would be able to verify the existance or otherwise of the inclusion of main engines during yyour time as Mate on 'HANYANG'. I remained as 2/E after Cyril and yourself left the ship in 1958 and I continued through to 1960 with the legendary Mr Beech but I doubt very much if Harold would be aware of the actual location of anything remotely mechanical!!!.

I Attended the Memorial Service today for William (Bill) Rae-Smith CBE, MC, Croix de Guerre, Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure, at the British Empire Chapel in St. Pauls Cathederal. A number of our more senior members will remember him as Tai Pan in Japan from 1960 to around 1970 ( give or take a year or so ). Sir Adrian Swire gave the Address mentioning his contribution to CNCo., and shipping generally during his tenure in Yokohama and Tokyo. The service was attended by his sons William, who gave a tribute, and JB a reading, plus his widow Bridget. Shipping was well represented including the Senior Swire brothers, Graham McCallum, Peter Roberts, Peter Barnard, David Beauchamp, Chris Ryder, Geoff Havilland, Rogan McLellan, Dick Large, James Hughes-Hallett and a number of very senior old boys whom I did not know. I represented the Swire Mariners who would have known him. Also present were a couple of ex Taipans Duncan Bluck and John Brown plus Jackie Bremridge and Kyoko Gledhill.
Bill Rae-Smith died in France earlier this year and his ashes have been scattered in the Scottish Highlands.
Bill Rae-Smith was 89.

Sad to hear of the death of Bill Jefferies. I last saw him in command of bulk carrier in Geelong in the 90'S. Bill was 3rd Mate of the Chefoo when Peter Small and self went over from the Port Chalmber in Gladstone or Cairns in 59. I was so inpressed with the pints of San Mig that kept coming and the pressed whites that the steward brought up, that I joined up as soon as I got second mates in 60. I flew out to HK and was told that I was joining Taiyuan and heading south to Melb. Well as yopu now all know Bill broke his ankle so I joined the Chefoo with Paddy Reid david Meikle Langdon Cyril Cocksage Jimmy Morrison and old man Bill Pollock. Not going back to Melb. changed my life completely, and as every body knows I have always been happy with my lot I have to say a thank you to our departed Bill

Jack Higgs,
Thanks your message. Two things I remember about Harold Beeach, firstly the pink gin on the dot of 1130 daily and secondly he found the second Engineer stripping down a pump, when told there was nothing wrongjust routine maintenance Harold replied that if something was working you didn't touch it, wait until it broke down!!

The following exercise is apparently recommended for retired Senior Citizens,Masters and Chief Engineers who wish to gradually build up and/or maintain muscle strength in the arms and shoulder regions. It's relatively easy and it actually works ~ I've been doing it regularly for the past few years. The article suggests doing it for three days/week max. for new starters. Have patience and do not overdo it initially.
Begin by standing on a level, firm and comfortable surface where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5lb. potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and try to hold them there as long as possible, then relax.
Each day you'll find that you can hold this position a little longer until you can achieve a full minute, and after a couple of weeks steady progress you will find you can move up to 10lb.sacks in each hand and hold for more than a minute with confidence.
Finally, and without overstraining, put a small potato in each of the sacks.
Best of luck!.

Keen, enthusiastic devotees of this web site (both of you) may have noticed that recently we have been plagued by 'spam' entries from various nefarious gambling promoters and purveyors of preposterous pharmaceutical prescriptions. Contrary to popular opinion, this is not the HK Jockey Club trying to get its own back on Swire supporting only membership of the RHKYC and RHKGC; these are spammers of the worst kind, and we're not talking luncheon meat. We will be, however, if I ever get hold of them. Sorry; we clear entries as we find them - MAJB

Since when did the Company pay for entry into RHKGC? This used to be a bone of contention as membership was paid for the Cricket Club and Ladies' Rec. Club but NOT for golf!!!

One place I guess we might not be able to go back to Bob is the Kavieng RSL. If I remember it correctly you boys listed the ship ( Island Chief ) and my forklift truck toppled through an unguarded tweendeck opening onto the RSL's brand new 10 ft.sq., wraparound bar with in built stubby / xxxx coolers. I think the Pilot rescued us and we had a memorable dinner at his Island home....

I was watching the T.V.show "4 Corners"only last night when they had a most interesting program on ship building in Korea.
A fascinating 20 minutes as they showed the progress of ship building over the last 20 years-whole,totally fitted out sections of ships, from keel to mast top, being shifted from building to assembly drydock, welded together, painted over the weld and floated out to sea.
At one point over the interviewees'right shoulder was a ship model with a black funnel complete with The Swire flag painted on it.Couldn't see any more ford.of the bridge and my question is-
Has anybody any idea of the ships name details etc.etc.

Oh, come on Maurice, it's not that bad. It's got ducks ...

Many of you know Kelvin Troughton. His daughter Davinia Troughton reports as follows, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina:
Although the situation at home right now due to this damning hurricane is beyond believable and worsening by the day, my father is safe in Alabama with my sister. My mom is still in England but has to reroute her flight to Alabama as well.
After a nervous couple of days of very little communication and not knowing exactly where my father was, we learned he had run out of gas and was stranded along the interstate in Mississippi. The entire area had been badly damaged and they had blocked off most of the exits due to dangerous flooding conditions and downed power lines and trees. With that said, no gas stations were in operation either and he had little choice but to sit it out on the side of the road and sleep in the car in very hot weather. Thankfully, a trucker stopped for him and he was able to hitch-hike across the state of Mississippi. Unfortunately, it took them nearly 10 hours to travel what would have normally taken them less than 2 hours by car. They saw many desperate people along the way who were suffering in the heat, sitting in their cars for hours at a time waiting for the National Guard bulldozers to clear the roads.
He and his trucker friend (a nice guy named David from Texas) finally arrived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, shortly after midnight where my dad tried to sleep outside on a Wal-Mart park bench. The next morning, when he regained cell phone service he was able to contact my sister who drove about 3 hours to scoop him up. They found him slightly disheveled, very fatigued, and a little out-of-sorts since he hadn't slept in a proper bed or bathed in about 4 days. But he is safe and healthy.
We have no idea about the status of our home or the condition of our neighborhood. We’re hoping we were spared the devastating floods but fallen trees and blasted windows are also a big concern.
Isn’t it amazing that just a few weeks ago we were in full celebration mode and carefree? But keep those in the Greater New Orleans Area and Gulf Coast in your thoughts because there is so much suffering right now.
See the "full celebration mode" in the SMA Rogues' Gallery

Jules,
Your memory fades, the incident with the forklift rapidly desending between decks and eventually impaling itself through the ships side took place one lunchtime in Rabal, I still recall the cloud of dust as the offending would be driver took off back to whenst he came. It was the Pap Chief as the escape route was via the side port.
The Honiara incident, also Pap Chief, when a rather smarter than usual forklift driver took it on himself to top the hydraulics up with petrol on the basis that if it goes in one hole it must go in the other and combined it with his Fangio driving skills to arrive at the side port in a screach of brakes with all systems a go, followed by a ball of flame and one very singed driver also departing the scene for pastures new.
I'm not sure if this was the same time I introduced flora in the form of a rather large tree that I had become attached too, into your rather small (3rd Mates) cabin or not. Or was it when we intoduced cane toads to Bob's cabin where they found solace beneath his bunk (for a week or two) and drew some peculiar comments during the daily round of crib.
While I'm here, a belated happy birthday to Cyril, it was very good to get your letters, I wish I have your memory when I get to your grand old age, take care my friend.
Stu, I haven't forgotten just did not remember to hand over 15 quid to Jules last week in London, I will post it to him so he can hand across

Don't know if any esteemed readers remember my brother John - he was Master on the Swire's Athel Line tankers (thence Panaocean-Anco). He set up his own business ashore mainly tankcleaning, but spent periods at sea to bolster the bank balance, including spells on the VLCC 'Eriskay' in the early days in lay-up in Piraeus, and later on standing by the PROBO's in Korea. Anyway, at the ripe old age of 61 he has divested himself of his company and is now doing the whole circumnavigation of the globe on the next 'Clipper Venture' yacht race round the world, starting from Liverpool on the 18th.September. Next year, a return to Scotland is on the cards and we plan to go to Falkirk on the weekend commencing 22nd September. It is also planned that the summer outing is to be a boat trip to the Isle of Lundy with our old friend Colin Darch in command. As it will be the 10th anniversary of the SMA next year, a cocktail party is also on the cards. Details will follow as the information becomes available.

As I am sure most of you are aware, there is a certain young lady in the Office in London, called Chris Nugent. Apparently the time has come for Chris to hand over the key board, to an even younger soul. This Years Christmas Party at Buchingham Gate will be her last, and a good turn out is expected. There will be some of us however, who will be working, and will miss this momentous occasion. I am sure there will be many out there who would like to pass on there best to her, and what better way than via the SMA, there has to be some of us that will be going to the party ? In the early 60s, CN Co. started employing local young men as junior engineers on board China Nav. fleet. We were normally served a five year standard apprenticeship with either Whampoa or Taikoo Shipyards, and had obtained the 2nd Class Part A, before joining the company. Since then, some of us stayed with the company for a long time, and a lot of us also settled ashore, working at local power stations, Macau ferries or became surveyors, ship managers or ship/engineer consultants. At the last re-union in Hong Kong, we all wish to express our gratitude to most senior engineers we worked under, for their patient guidance, trust and generosity.

The mind boggles, does it not. Hey, though ... maybe this might be a good scam for Stu to get involved in, to be sure of those subscriptions:
To Whom It May Concern
My name is Stuart Molongo Shields, Secretary of the Nigerian branch of the Swire Marinated Association. Forgive me for writing to you so bluntly, but my situation requires that I immediately find someone I can trust, such as your good self. Your name was given to me by a mutual friend as someone who will understand the requirements of international banking having screwed up your Provident Fund so royally, and are likely to be able to help me in my quest. My long lost aunt, Madelina Palaver Shields, was married to the Financial Controller of the Upper Nigerian Mining and Irrigation Consortium. Into his hands was entrusted the sum of four hundred million nineteen hundred dollars and thirty six cents. The gentleman has since popped his cloggos (Nigerian for clogs) and his wife requires that the money be kept safely in an account that cannot be tainted by corruption or graft. You being a clever kind of bloke, and not drinking so much these days, Mrs. Shields has asked me to contact you accordingly. For arranging this transaction, your share of the proceeds will be one hundred million dollars and loose change, since I can't be bothered to work out the math. Please forward your banking details promptly if you are able to accommodate this request. The sum of fifteen pounds sterling (interestingly, equivalent to one year's subscription to the SMA) will be necessary in advance to facilitate matters with the Nigerian authorities. I look forward to hearing from you. This matter is best kept confidential between us at this juncture. Yours faithfully, Stuart Molongo "Mugu" Shields, DFC, OBE, LBW, BEER with Bar."

As you are so well-qualified Mark, perhaps you would advise me. I am taking eldest gran'daughter to Oxford on Monday for interview at Brasenose College, should I wear morning suit, best unform or slob out in cords and trainers?

Slob out, Maurice. It's the look these days. If you wear either of the others, people will think either you've lost your wedding party or your ship and in either case, your granddaughter will disown you. No, purple Oxford bags, worn around the hips and dragging on the floor; flak jacket with ornaments; baseball cap worn sideways. That'll do it. Anyway, 'scuse me; I'm just on the 'phone to Jarrod arranging my Extra Master's - MAJB
P.S. Everyone looking forward to Christmas? It's started already in the US, of course. Thought you'd all enjoy this picture of my daughter standing next to our neighbour's latest Crimbo decoration. The snow flurries, with a fan in the base propelling it around the globe, and this delightful addition to any home is lit up at night. Isn't it just charming?

I had the very pleasant experience last week of attending the Christmas lunch generally organised by John Gardner and attended by mainly Sydney office people and a couple of "boaties"namely Jim,myself and wives{only on Christmas }.
John organises these "do's"when in good health, about four times a year and it is always nice to see old friends,Ron Smith,Frank Clark,Ross Gregg and others from the office.
Somehow it seems more genteel(or less grog drunk)than the CNCo.reunion in February where definitely wifes are required for the drive home!!!!!
We are all getting on in our lives, and drinking less, and some in less than good health but all enjoying the chance to catch up.
Here's to the next Reunion and a Merry Christmas to all.
