Ship's Log Entries 2004
2004 was another exciting year in the history of the Swire Mariners Association. We welcomed several new members and, to the best of our recollection, nobody died. If you did, please let us know, otherwise we might think you are simply trying to get out of your round.

A Happy New Year To All,
I've been asked by Peter Beveridge, a member of my pre sea training school HMS Conway Yahoo group, if I know how to contact Peter Clarke. An e-mail address would be best. I see that he attended the Chatham reunion (isn't he the one standing on the right?) but his name isn't on the group members list (or am I blind?). Can anybody please help??
Also noted a brief message from Russell Rawlings right at the end of the 2003 messages. How are you doing?? I remember you from my CP days and a party at the Pontevechio restaurant in London 77/78 but not since. What are you up to in Greece?? Why isn't your name on the list??
All's well in Yokohama and enjoying an unseasonally bright and warm winter.
Best regards
David Cooper

Anyone here been to Rabaul? OK, everyone's been to Rabaul. What I need is either a contact for Geoff McKenzie or details of an Arbylift. The EU has in its infinite wisdom spotted that small ports don't move containers, and a British coaster owner (not Michael Everard!) has asked me about Arbylifts.
Please drop an email to ACraigBennett@aol.com if you offer any assistance....please!

Gentlemen,
The SMA committee paid a visit to Greenwich yesterday 5/02/04 and we can now confirm our intention of holding a summer gathering there on the 24th June.
The plan is to meet at Westminster Pier at 1100hrs on that day and take the 1130hrs ferry to Greenwich where we will walk approximately 50 yards to a restaurant named SE10 in Thames Street. Arriving between 1315hrs and 1330hrs.
We have the whole restaurant to ourselves and after lunch, the choice of tours are The Cutty Sark, The National Maritime Museum or the Royal Observatory. All within very easy reach. All interested members will receive further details by post.

Phil Hulson presently ashore somewhere in Peru, from the Erradale
How times have changed!.
Having abstained from accepted recreational pastimes of old I find myself
sitting at an internet booth perusing a most entertaining site. The old man, Tony Baker, has also sifted through the mailbox.
Many thanks to Mark for his work on the site!
Just in case anyone wonders, don´t come to San Nicolas for holiday. You´ll be very disappointed unless you have an unhealthy interest in sand and iron ore.
There are ¨allegedly¨ knocking shops around but being good healthy employees
have opted not to attend for a matinee session.
Can´t understand why when we face a 30 day voyage to China. Maybe they should check our mental health.
Salute !!

The day after a very successful Aussie reunion,'tis very good to see all in good health and Barry in particular. The guys from the land of the long white cloud were noticeably absent, and rightly so after their terrible performance in the world cup, lift your heads up guys we will be able to accept a drink from you next year!!!!!As for the Melbourne lot,we presume that it was raining down there and the airport was closed again, try driving next year!!The north was well represented by the TI pilot service, was anybody piloting ships ? even Mike and Pauline after a 24 year absence from the golden city were drinking the finest drop again, nice to see the Tideys again.
We are in the middle of packing and in the process of shifting to Adrians for six weeks before our Bowral residence becomes vacant,Jeanettes mobile is 0405383811.
Thanks Mike for organising our reunion, heres to the next year.

The 2004 Australasian Reunion was held on 29 February as forecast. 34 people attended which is about average, unfortunately no-one from either NZ or Victoria was able to come because of prior commitments. In future the reunion will be held on the last Sunday of February each year and it is expected that this will make it easier for everyone to attend if they so wish.

The Australian Reunion was a great day. Bob Steer was quite correct, it has been 24 years since I was swilling grog in Sydney. I enjoyed seeing all the 'old' faces again. It was funny, I hav'nt aged at all but everyone else has!Noel Dowzer and I yarned about the W's the Wanliu in particular. The 'Quiet Australian' Ron Sullivan was in good form.I was quite amazed when everyone ordered Gin and Tonics for drinkies. What is the attraction with that stuff.

News from down under. Ewings and Walker have been giving the northern waters of the North Island an experimental dip. Sailing and drinking.Walker is now an officianado on cattle, particuarly heifers, having been to a number of auctions where "Giles Ewings" has been bidding for the beasts of N.Is.Have you heard the latest on his new Bull(the four legged Variety)still missing in the forest after seven weeks. Poor chap spotted Mrs Ewings wearing a pair of rubber gloves and clutching scissors. Sent him over the electric fence not withstanding the dangly bits and the high voltage. After 2 wks. DRW proceeds Syd, and Cairns,Thence Perth and Spore.Walker meanwhile has fallen for Marilyn, the auburn haired beauty of the fields, it was love at first sight, God knows what Mrs W has to do to woo him out of the paddock.
Cheers to all

Webmaster seeks work! Send all your spare money here! Large bills accepted! Seriously, folks, in the passenger shipping business we've gone from fifty owners with two or three ships each a few years back, all of whom wanted to do something, to two or three owners with fifty ships each, who don't. Add in the Internet taking away the information edge we used to provide, terrorism taking away the passengers plus far too many floating hotels to count and it's all got rather boring. Well, it wouldn't be if it paid more, perhaps, but now that England's Finest are both owned by Carnival Group I confess to a waning of enthusiasm. Wot to do? All I ask is that you stalwart socialites keep me in mind when discussing $200K opportunities at cocktail parties! Have brain (albeit slightly addled), will travel, even for less although if it's to PNG I'll bring my own woman, thanks. Web stuff, projects, marketing, aviation, feasibility studies, anything but behind the counter at McDonalds. Thanks, team; oh, and if you do by any chance have any ships to sell or buy, I'll keep that filing cabinet open too.

The Ancient Mariner moves on after eating and drinking his way through Sydney.
A very delightful evening at the Greengate Hotel where he caught up with a few past shipmates-The Whiteheads,Eltons.Hutchinsons,Steers and John Howard and all were very pleased to see you David and also to hear you were hungover the next morning, you never could handle the good drop!!!!
Don't tell anyone he said but we were seen to be drinking Belgium beer in the state of Tooheys and avery nice drop it was.
A night was spent with Peter Fong and then we packed him onto a plane last seen heading north to Cairns. He hopes to catch up with Tidey in Brisbane before heading to the west and anywhere else he can bum a bed for a night or two.
Cheers David we will do it again soon, but do bring Lorraine next time.J needs some female company.

I was wandering around a second-hand shop the other day when I came across a silk fan that had been used as a Chinese Night dinner menu on "Taiyuan". I bought it and had a little "google" to find this place.
After a while on Taiyuan, Shansi, and Soochow in the '60's I wandered off to Manners and spent 3 yrs as Master b4 realising that I was condemned to another 30 years of reading paper backs all day. Thought about Pilotage .... but a meeting with Neil Bohill convinced me that was a dead end job. Went on an Antarctic Expedition for 15 months, got into the offshore oil industry on return and finished up as Marine Super. with Atlantic Richfield shifting their semi-submersible oil rigs around the world for 'film-star' rates. Went to Uni and studied Contract Law, ran the NT Govt's contract power business, built and ran the Palm Valley - Alice Springs natural gas pipeline, became CEO of a division of TNT, lived and worked in Jugoslavia for a while (b4 the war). Retired, published 5 (so far) books on horseracing. Thinking of coming out of retirement ..it's boring.

Greetings. I was a Swire Man from 1980 to '91, sailed as R/O on many CnCO vessels, and later in SPO. Last one was DSV "Wira Maju", a dry ship, which was my salvation. My best regards to Brian Bell, Chris Coy, Tony Ravenhill, Phil Hulson, Bernie Simpson and any others who remember me. I've been happily settled in Singapore since swallowing the anchor and work for another venerable British company, Kelvin Hughes. Grovelling apologies to all and sundry for any past misdeeds. Hey, ease off The Mouse! Please remember that, unlike Tintin, Mickey's first adventure was "Steamboat Willie" in 1928, which predates many of the tickets around here, for sure. "Wild Waves" followed in 1929, "Boat Builders" in 1938 and "Tugboat Mickey" in 1940. Thus it can be seen that Walt's famous rodent has the equivalent experience of working for CNCo, Oceanroutes, HUD and HKST. Not a bad track record for a mouse.

Just a couple of items, I see Maurice Burbidge made the letters page of today's Daily Telegraph Friday 30 July 2004.
TERROR WITH SOY SAUCE
Sir, I await with baited breath the appearance of the Government's advice on preparing for a terrorist attack (report. July 27). More than 40 years ago, a few foreign ships trading to China were given instructions on how to prepare for a chemical/biological attack by "US Imperialists".
One instruction I still remember is that we were to have cauldron of water boiling. In the event of attack, we could then pick up the bacteria with chopsticks and drop them into the boiling water. I can't believe that the new instructions will be any more illuminating.

Thanks for putting the Oz reunion photos on the site. Can't really understand why anyone would want to know where a flag lives, but well, it takes all kinds I suppose. It lives in the bottom drawer of the dresser in the hall of the house of the O'Keeffe family

Also sick of the olympics being on 24 hours a day and now they throw an election at us!!! My departure date for the U.K.can't come soon enough!!
Thanks for your info Maurice,I have found a hotel at Shepards Bush which is in my price range and quite good value I just have to contact DW to see what he has arranged for me in the CBD of Newton Ferrers, what is his e-mail address?I have it somewhere it would be easier if it could be sent to me.
Fancy old Cyril reaching 80 and fancy old Tony knowing about it and being there for the G @ T's.Good on you Tony, you come from Yorkshire do you?

Hello,
I served on the Soochow from 1957 -1969 as
2nd Mate and Chief Mate on my last trip before
going on leave - never to return! I have
commissioned a painting of the vessel
berthed in Port Moresby but we lack some
details of the after deck. Has anybody got any
photos of Soochow that they could send as
e-mail attachments, at least 300dpi, to me, PLEASE!!

Hi all,
There's a typo in my first message. It wasn't
1969 when I left the Soochow but 1960! Would I still be sane if I had stayed that long in one ship?
I am sane, aren't I?

Where can I find a TRUE accoun of the Changsha incident, when she was aground of
Yokaichi and the crew spent five months camped on the sand in home made tents under the leadership of the unflappable Captain Freddy Follett.

I have just received the following sad news from SMA member Brian White in Australia:-
I don't know whether news has yet reached over there but Members who have been on the PNG run at any time during the last 40 or so years will probably be saddened to learn that Stuart Scott passed away at Beenleigh in Queensland on Friday. The funeral is this Friday. He retired there a year or so ago.

And by popular request, another look at that centrefold ....

Weeks later .... OK, maybe they weren't funny after all ... do we have a quorum here? While I'm asking ... does anyone ever visit or download our Pinup Calendars? Apart from a single comment from the Middle East some years ago and the knowledge that our faithful Secretary prints his out monthly and tapes it on his bulkhead, I have not heard one comment from anyone, ever, about the creative genius you have been offered every month for five years, to date. Shall I give it up? Is your web-brat wasting his time?
I say this in jest, of course, as dutifully combing the Internet for a new lass with which to enhance our lives is the best fifteen minutes of every month for me, ... but I am interested to know. Same applies to our flightsim section - MAJB

Have patience Mark and don't pull the pin just yet I am still perusing or perving on the first years pin ups and did't realise there were more to come.
Had a great reunion in the Plymouth gin factory a pity we had to return to the Holiday Inn there were many tales coming from the former but then we wouldn't have learnt about the medical problems of our members!!!!
Has anybody heard of Tony since the floods in Queensland,he is obviusly awash in gin or floodwater,I favour the former. If Plymouth is available Tony switch to that, after many years of Gordons and a few months of Beefeater I have and can recommend it.
Cheers,
Bob

As an run-up to the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar an actor dressed as Nelson went up the Thames on an RNLI lifeboat, health & safety regs dictated that he had to wear a modern lifejacket over his nelsonian uniform! The following appeared last week in a newspaper:
N. Order the signal sent Hardy.
H. Ay,aye sir.
N. Hold on, that's not what I dictated. What's the meaning of this?
H. Sorry sir?
N. England expects every person to do his duty regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability. What gobbledegook is this?
H. Admiralty policy sir. We're an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil's own job getting "England" past the censors, lest it be considered racist.
N. Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco.
H Sorry, sir. All naval vessels have been designated smoke-free working environments.
N. In that case, break open the rum ration, let's splice the mainbrace to steel the men before battle.
H. The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral, because of govt. policy on binge drinking.
N. Good heavens Hardy. I suppose we had better get on with it. Full speed ahead.
H. I think you'll find ther's a 4 knot speed limit here.
N. Damn it man, we are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history, we must advance with all despatch. Report from the crow's nest please.
H. That won't be possible, sir, health & safety have closed the crow's nest. No harness and the rope ladder does not meet regs. They won't let anyone up there until proper scaffolding has been erected.
N. Then get me the carpenter without delay.
H. He's busy knocking up wheelchair to the fo'c'stle Admiral.
N. I've never heard anything so absurd.
H. Health & Safety again, sir,we have to provide a barrier-free environment for the differently abled.
N. Differently abled! I've only one eye and one armand I refuse to hear mention of the word. I didn't rise to the rank of admiral playing the disability card.
H. Actually you did, sir. The RN is under-represented in areas of visually impaired and limb deficiency.
N. Give me full sail.
H. A couple of problems there too, sir. H&S won't let the crew up the rigging without crash helmets and they don't want anyone breathing in too much salt.
N. I've never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to standby to engage the enemy.
H. tThe men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone,Admiral.
N. What! This is mutiny.
H. It's not that, they're afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There's a couple of lawyers on board watching everyone like hawks.
N Then how are we to sink the French and the Spaniards?
H. Actually, sir,we're not.French and Spanish are our European partners now. According to Common Fisheries policy we shouldn't even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensatio.
N. But you must hate the French as you hate the devil?
H. Don't let the ship's diversity co-ordinator hear you, you'll be up on a disciplinary.
N. You must consider every man who speaks ill of your king, an enemy?
H. Not any more, sir. Now put on your Kevlar vest, it's the rules.
N. Don't tell me, more H&S. What ever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?
H. As I explained, rum is off the ration and corporal punishment is banned.
N. What about sodomy?
H. I believe that is encouraged,sir.
N. In that case...Kiss me Hardy!
This would be funny if it weren't so true of present-day England.
