Just the usual suspects, Maurice. A very Happy New Year to you and all who have awoken to 2003. On a personal note, thanks to those who sent Christmas cards to the Beaumont household this year. A few were incorrectly addressed. Mark, Maryann and Katherine now live at 7, Highland View Drive, Bayville, NY 11709, USA. That's over the pond, to most of you. Tel no. is +1 516 922 3615. Fridge is full (well, once a day, anyway).

Received the following e-mail from Bob Steer:- A very happy new year to you Stu and all in the Mariners. I can't get on to the visitors entry page and haven't been able to for several weeks I don't know what the problem is and just haven't the time to investigate. We are in the middle or really just started to sell up and downsize to a more managable size house and trying to organise the junk from four generations into carbon cartons,a mammoth task to eliminate 30 years of memories. The painters have just arrived so once again Stu all the very best for the coming months and congratulations for what looks like being a resounding win in the fifth Test. Bob Steer. You might like to put this in the visitors book for me.B.S.

Mmmm ... Bob, that's strange. There are some issues with Netscape browsers - particularly older versions - so if you are browsing with Netscape, download and try out MS Internet Explorer - it's way ahead in my view and should give you no problems. I've just tested the page you refer to and all is well - so if it's not your browser, it may be a wandering possum or lack of alcohol to blame. Let us know, ya booga - MAJB

My grandfather - Reginald James Allinson worked on at least four of the China Navigation ships during his career. I only just found this site and am grateful to the company / individuals that created it as it brings me closer to him and the family. Thank you and well done - it is an excellent site. Thirty years after the demise of one of Britain's biggest shipowners - British India Steam Navigation - a major work of reference on the company and its ships is being published in electronic format. The new edition of 'Laxon & Perry', which has become the bible of the fleet and which is known throughout eastern waters, contains updates by the surviving co-author Bill Laxon, a leading authority on merchant shipping companies of the period. Publisher Ninety North believes it is one of the first maritime reference ebooks published in the UK.

In the belief that this may be of interest to a number of members, we include a link to Ninety North's site here, which has more details:

I find it hard to believe that my gobelty gook message made it. After months of typing, which is not easy and finding my messages have been swallowed up somewhere this message got through miracles will never cease. I had written about our very successful reunion here in Sydney a couple weeks ago, numbers were down a bit but good to see a strong N.Z.contingment fronting up especially after their humiliating show in the Americas Cup. We have shifted from Barrie Street after 30 years of living there and 30 years of collecting stuff but the house was finally sold and as a tempory measure, 12 months, we are living at St.Ives and the address is as below. I can't believe this will be sent, we will see. R.D.Steer 8/5-9 Cowan Road, St.Ives. N.S.W. 2075. Australia Even a new telephone number 0294494530 and Jeanettes mobile 0405383811.

I was in reasonable shape at last year’s medical check but getting creaky at the joints and teeth and hair are vanishing and I can only manage about five cans in the evening without suffering. I do not have a computer and I am using Kayoko’s niece’s to send this now strongly thinking of getting one as it is great to see all the names and info though very sad to learn of those who have moved on Did get the last two Shipping Newsletters which brought me up to date on the fleet after about nine years would like to start all over again I imagine we all would. Yes Maurice my glasses still fall off the end of my nose and I use a piece of elastic to keep them in place. My telephone and fax number is 81 743 2 1619.

Puzzled by the failure of the monthly pension sub to arrive I faxed London yesterday, and received the following which may be of interest to others similarly afflicted. Tks yr. fax.We discovered after receiving it that our bankers had moved and hadnot taken the trouble to advise us.More over our instruction letter had not been forwarded to their new premises. After many flurries the bank confirmed that they had made the payment to you , and our other pensioners who similarly had not recieved funds today. I hope you receive it soon.Thank you for drawing our attention to this matter and I hope you have not been embarrased by the non receipt of funds." unquote.-- and there one, always thought that Australian banks were the worst in the world. regards to one an all."

Have just had a couple of weeks in Cairns on a Captain Cook boat that had run out of qualified engineers, somebody has to do it!!!Read the news of Dave and have just put the phone down from talking to him and the problem is fluid on the lungs which nobody can explain and he is having an op on Tuesday, but he said today he is feeling better than yesterday so I am sure we all hope that the trend continues. Have also read the excellent publication Marine News,at least I still know the ships and a few of the personnel, the little entry on the back page about the fire place brought to mind when I was on the cross channel ferries and home port of Ramsgate the pub we used to frequent was the HQ of the air sea rescue through the war. Mine host decided the fire place was in the wrong position in the dining room and decided to move it to another wall and to defray costs was just going to brick it in. Before doing so he got a plastic,I think, skeleton, dressed it in an old German uniform, roped it to a chair and bricked in the fire place!!!!!! I wonder if it is still there??

Well chaps.....recovered now but yesterday morning, my head was pounding. The SMA day out at the London Eye was a complete success and the cocktail party afterwards was wonderful. It was so good to see all those old faces and their wives and I'm sure that everyone enjoyed the whole day. A short speech was given by Sir Adrian Swire, followed by another from our Chairman Graeme Drewery and both speeches were well received. Another reason to raise our glasses........hence the headache. If you couldn't make it to the gathering, our thoughts were all with you and hope everyone is doing well.

Greetings, I was wondering if you could please suggest where I might do some research in connection with my grandfather Harry Blakey (1884-1936). He was a ship's engineer and worked for a time for the China Navigation Company, his last berth being on the S.S. Shuntien in 1916. A woman named Doris Luk at China Navigation Co. answered an e-mail I sent, saying the company doesn't have personnel records going back that far. Mainly, I'd like to know where that shipped sailed during the second decade of the 20th century. Harry Blakey was a keen photographer and I have some interesting pictures he took along the coast of China, some of them in 1914, depicting many British troops, and also the Shuntien. I'd be happy to scan them and share them with anybody who cares. Cheers,

Have just returned to Oz with wife Sheila, after six weeks holiday in UK, the first for six years, but not long enough to catch up with some old friends. We went on the London Eye outing, very spectacular, followed by the Swire cocktail party, and it was great to see old friends and shipmates..Strolling back from the Eye to Swire House, we did'nt make it to the Albert Pub, but settled for the Buckingham Arms for some liquid refreshment, in the company of Ralph Kennett and Bill and Hannah Jeffrey. Photo to follow. Yesterday, I visited Ken Nettleship, laid up at home with a broken leg. Ken and Helen had attended the BI reunion in Auckland recently, and continued on a Kiwi holiday in South Island with friends, cut short by Ken's accident in Queenstown, followed by ten days in hospital in Invercargill. Having had two hip operations a few years ago, Ken now has another piece of metal holding his anatomy together. Old friends will be glad to know his right arm is still working and Ken is in good spirits ! Best wishes to all.......

Mike, Have you had your appendix out or are you referring to mine, removed by one Dr.Altinbey at Yokohama in 1960. (When I returned to HK the doctor there asked if Altinbey was a doctor of medicine or philosophy!!!). I rather like the sound of abcient Mike. The thought of a bridge sans any electronic aids came to mind when I recalled coming on the bridge of Yochow in Indonesia and finding you weaving in/out of the "Thousand Islands" west of Tg.Priok telling me you were practising to be a Barrier Reef pilot. Circa 1960 I think. Hope to see you in late November, was coming out earlier but something called the rugby world cup seems to have filled up the aircraft seats. Beautiful golfing weather here at present, mid thirties and the ball is bouncing, managed only five rounds last week. Love to Maddy, Maurice

Sorry to hear of the passing of Dave McHugh, certainly a legend on his own, remember some good cabin partys on the Nanchang. He left me pushing a volkswagon somewhere in the back blocks of Sydney, with him in it and couple of sheilas, all suitably ineabriated, finally diappearing over a hill into the night sky, took me hours to get back to Woolomoloo, always the joker Dave, have a san mig on me.

Had a very unexpected visit from Harvey and Margaret Lade yesterday, complete with caravan , all the way from Melbourne. They stayed for a couple of hours during which time we seemed to cover a vast amount of CNCo ancient history.Including setting up a Christmas Party for Tenku Abdul Rahman in 1988 aboard the old Kuala Lumpur.( The problem of locating Hallal killed turkeys.) They had come via Bourke where they had fallen in with a local Swire gathering( shore folk)headed by Tim Bridgeman. I am glad to report that both harvfey and margaret looked well.

Just in case anyone has missed this bit of news, CNCo have bought those young upstarts, The Bank Line! This is not the same as buying Andrew Weir, I understand; the latter seem to want to be ship managers for the MOD, etc. and have sold The Bank Line. But it seems that, 131 years after starting, and quite a few years after those whippernsappers at Cathay, CNCo now has a liner service from the UK! Well done, all concerned, but rather than comment further I will just express the hope that some official statement will soon appear here.

Re CNCo buying Bank Line: I am amazed .Since when did Bank Kine become a liner company running out of the UK? Having sailed as Second mate from Jan 1952 Until Dec 1954 aboard their 1919 twinscrew museum piece-Inverbank- Lascar crew in an open f'o'cle and no running water anywhere aboard- without going within coee of the Uk I am bewildered. Weirs must have changed some what in the interval since I left. They didnt tell me

James, the well known tendency of Bank boats to wander more or less aimlessly about the globe, reeking of tradition and Stockholm tar and wayporting any cargo they could lay hands on, has tended, in recent years to take the form of wandering out from the UK towards the land of Oz and wandering back again, picking up CNCo cargo to and from PNG if they possibly could, and thereby irritating the Chairman. In recent times they have been using four ex-Polish 'tweendeckers for this, each with 12 passengers (who presumably sign on for "life or the duration"). I am informed by Higher Authorities that the four ships concerned have been taken on charter by CNCo, because it seems a lot of the stuff that we lug around PNG et al originates in Europe, so we can cut out the middle man.

Hi,I was directed to this fine site by someone at CNCo. Doing some family history stuff - does anyone remember Francis Booth? Ships captain on CNCo ships from 1930 until 1955ish.Served on numerous ships. Also torpedoed by Japs in WWII when captain of Kwangtung - one of few survivers apparently. Maybe too long ago but worth a chance I guess. Cheers!!

Dear Andrew, Regarding your request for an official missive on the Bank Line - after rather protracted negotiations the acquisition was complated on 15 August and CNCo commences management of the service with first vessel being handed over in mid Sept with final vessel in mid Oct. CNCo will be chartering the 4 x 22,700 dwt, 1983 Finnish built ro-ro's from Andrew Weir, with purchase options (the vessels are ice class, which will come in handy for those chilly nights in Lae). CNCo bought the name, cargo contracts, container fleet, the Tradco shipping agency in Honiara (and Guadalcanal Travel Services which came with the shipping agency - so if you're ever looking for cheap flights to the Solomons...). Bank Line provides a monthly round-the-world service linking N.Europe ports to the South Pacific. The vessels have 6000mt deep tanks for carriage of palm oil to Hull and Antwerp. The trade will be managed from Swire Sydney alongside CCS, NGPL and GBH. Last month we also completed the acquisition of another of the Challenger-class vessels, currently trading as Delmas Blosseville but to be named Chungking under her new CNCo colours. It is planned for Chungking to be deployed in Tasman Orient Line (TOL) operating between New Zealand and Asia. Cheers

It's rumoured that a good time was had by all at Chatham (what's new, apart from grey hair or lack of it) and that next year's venue has already been determined to be Plymouth so that Dave Walker doesn't have to walk so far. Could be something to do with the Plymouth Gin Distillery, too ... I think we should be told. Please, someone, give those of us who were too far away to attend the lowdown on The Chatham Caper.

Mark, I think you'll have to await the official report on Chatham, far be it for someone like me to report!! One thing I clearly remember is "Frobisher", hearing disco music from a wedding reception while we were dining, saying to the only female present "Perhaps when we have finished eating my dear I might take you on the floor?!" to which she replied "Vertically or horizontally?" Has anyone ever seen Frobisher speechless?!!!

That is very, very funny and definitely added to the collection of salty tales. One for you: I took my girlfriend of the time along to a certain bar in Hong Kong one night to meet "the lads" from the Asian Pearl, who were in port. They had been there for a while when we arrived. Most were impeccably polite to the sole lady guest, as would be expected of officers and gentlemen; excepting the Chief at that time who had, perhaps, consumed his fill. "Eaahhhhh ... d'ya wanna si' o' ma faice, lass!" he bellowed, by way of endearing Geordie welcome. Without batting an eyelid or missing a beat, my stalwart gal replied "Looks as though somebody already has." I was very proud of her at that moment - MAJB

Gentlemen, Sad to say but yet another of our old friends has passed away. Chief Engineer Bob Blacklock died a week or so ago and is being cremated today 28th November. He served in CNCo circa 1920's until early 50's when he joined the Hong Kong Marine Department rising to Surveyor General Ships until the 60's (Appologies for scant information, if anyone can improve on Bob's history, we would be delighted to hear from you)

We are in Margaret River,(south of Perth), for Christmas with my daughter and son-in-law. They work for one of the eighty or so wineries in the area; there is apparently a glut of Aussie red at present so we are doing our bit to help the colonials in their time of trial! (Don't mention the rugby). Had dinner in Sydney with the O'Keefes,Sullivans,Smiths, Cocksedges,Keebles and Bob Steer (he keeps Jeanette working!). Spent a day in Melbourne with Chris and Ros Coy and also a day with Geoff Parish, former Marine Supt. of Jardines. My wife has had the usual effect on the weather, it has been raining down here! After Xmas we are going south to Albany and denmark, might even come across Robbie Kidd down there! If we survive the three/four bottles of wine daily we are returning to UK in time to celebrate Australia Day there. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all

I know it's Christmas but I have some rather sad news that only came to light yesterday. Electrical Officer Glyn Ashton passed away earlier this month, I think it was the 6th December. Apparently he had been ill for sometime. Glyn was a very quiet man, except after a few drinks, like us all I guess but he was a pleasure to sail with and I always enjoyed his company. He never married so didn't have a family of his own but I know he had a sister who he often spoke of. A good man gone so young, we'll miss him even though I could never get him to join the SMA.

Blimey, Haver, you still alive? I thought that wicked past would have caught up with you by now. Mind you, marrying the best looking radio officer in the fleet must have helped (thank heavens she was female, at least). Do send my love to the esteemed mem sahib when she forgives you for your hangover. Talking of which, how on earth did you manage to prise all that grog out of Fortress Dudley? Industrial strength chisel on his wallet, perhaps? Did you threaten to make public the legend about the umbrella and the rice cooker? Surely not. But I think we should be told (just teasing, Dudley; I do remember you bought me a beer. Though two would have been nice ...). Haver, if they've deported you from Disco Bay or wherever, do give a ring to 01242 525871 before you leap back on board Coffee Pathetic. Myself, 'er indoors and Kate Da Great (three and a half last time I asked her and yes, she was a miracle) are here in Blighty until Jan 3rd. I might even visit a Cashpoint if I knew there was a chance of a beer with you, old salt.
