Ship's Log Entries 2000

The year '2K' heralded a wealth of contributions to the now substantial and internationally famous SMA Ship's Log. There was certainly more action here than in The Dome, as you'll find below. Some sad, some glad, some bad; news of the lads and the occasional cad. You'll dredge it all up here.

Happy New Year, gentlemen and damsels. Where were you for the Millennibum Moment? Myself, on the quay at the Salcombe RNLI station in the rain with three ladies of the night (well, it was dark, anyway). May your 2000 be as great as you want it to be. Let's sort the world out, too, this century ... we made a bit of a pig's ear of the last one. With best wishes to you all ... oh and by the way, check out our January Jenny.

A happy and prosperous new year to all SMA web site surfers; that's assuming, of course, that you sold your internet stocks at the end of December ....... no? ooops! Please see new e-mail address for John Swire & Sons Ltd., London. On a sadder note David Gledhill, ex Swire Shipping Chairman and Taipan (see earlier message from Stu Shields), was buried at the Brompton Cemetery on Friday the 17th December. A memorial service was held after the burial but on the same day at St. Mary's Church The Little Boltons, at which Sir Adrian Swire gave the Address. Kyoko Gledhill has requested that any donations in Davids memory should go to 'The Missions to Seamen' If any more info is required please contact me at this e-mail number. I am pausing from investigating sinkings, crashings and bashings to wish all my old shipmates a Happy Millennium or, as my 5 year lad Munro said, a "Happy Linoleum!" I celebrated by quaffing bottles of Piper and Mumm with a Captain of another of the world's favourite airlines! We toasted comrades whereever they were while looking up into the sky thanking The Good Lord that we were on the ground! Now it's chocks away and up anchor for another 1000 years. To all those at sea - mind those wrecks and rogues in traffic lanes! You wouldn't want me marching on board!

It is my sad duty to inform you that Jimmy Lough has passed away. He will be missed by us all, especially me because I was hoping that he'd join the SMA and meet us at our annual gatherings. As Secretary of the SMA, I would like to pass on our condolences to his family and to let Margaret and Jim know that our thoughts are with them.

I heard yesterday, with sadness, of the death of Captain James (Jimmy) Lough, not a member of SMA, but a fundamental part of the Swire maritime scene, and a large influence on all our lives during his tenure in the Hong Kong office. A great seaman and a first class administrator, taken before his due time.

Those who have, or have not, been in touch with David Walker following his recent stroke (on Christmas Eve - what a bummer) are formally advised that David wishes it to be known that he is now "officially" brain damaged and that, despite the usual rumours, it is (on this occasion) nothing to do with Geoff Havilland's propensity for serving up a respectable Malt in the dawning hours. David, get well soon ... we need you and we're with you. - MAJB

Jimmy Lough's funeral took place on Friday the 14th of January on a windy, slate grey day, at St Andrews Church in Berwick-upon-Tweed. About 40 or so mourners were at the service including Jimmy's wife Margaret, his son and daughter-in-law James and Joyce and his sister May. Tim Bridgman represented the Directors of JS&S, London, Graeme Drewery The Swire Mariners Association, and Robin Lewis, a serving CNCo. Master, was also present. The Service was simple yet poignant. The introductory organ music was beautifully played. The Vicar, (a lady), read an excellent Address covering Jim's life both ashore and afloat and the loves in his life namely his family, the Sea, his fishing, and sports. After the service the funeral cortege made its way to Edinburgh for a private cremation. A wake for Jimmy was held at 2pm that day at his house (No.3 Lords Mount, Berwick-upon-Tweed, TD15 1LY), where North Sea breakers could be seen crashing onto the beach about 300yds away on the other side of the golf course, it was that sort of day! According to James, Jimmy enjoyed sitting there watching the coastal traffic in the rough weather while he had a glass or two! James and his wife Joyce are returning to Melbourne where he works for Oldendorff Shipping. James's email is james.lough@bigpond.com Donations in memory of Jimmy may be made to: The Merchant Navy Welfare Board 19-21 Lancaster Gate London W2 3LN . To the SMA, Just a word of thanks for all the calls, e-mails and letter we have received in the past few weeks. Messages have come from Australia to Canada and including Hong Kong and the UK. It really does provide some comfort. Would also like to thank you for all the donations received at the Merchant Welfare Navy Board which is now in the region of 600 pounds. This is worrying as I've vowed to match whatever comes in. I remember when I turned 16, my father took me along for a curry lunch at the Ashoka on Wyndham Street with some of you as a sort of 'rite de passage'. I've not had chicken vindaloo since. All the best to you all and we wish Andrew and David a full and speedy recovery. Best regards, Margaret Lough and James Lough (Jnr). ps. You've got yourselves an excellent website.

Old China Hands who know Ted Jeggo will be disappointed to hear that he's off to hospital to be prodded about. Those with his contact numbers in Eire may wish to be in touch - MAJB

Sorry to "hog the Log" but BlindStu has managed to stuff up his computer (as of 18.2) and has asked me to say that he may be offline for a while until he figures out how to get his axe out of the monitor. Sorry to hear about Ted Jeggo, sailed with him in Eriskay, Calum Anderson in command, during my first tour when it was B & S. Ted always topped up his gin with an extra cap full having poured the initial 3 fingers. As a lowly 3rd mate at the time only saw him do this on Sundays in The Old Man's Cabin but we used to enjoy the odd ale & a bowl of noodles at midnight after my watch. Anyone in touch with Ted, please send my best. Cheers, Anchors Madeley

This is Falkner together with Walker at Newton Ferrers after suitably alcaholic refreshments at the yacht glug. DRW's staggers are excusble as he is now certifiably and clinically brain challenged. Falkner on the other hand being of sound Gaelic uprightness, has no such excuse on the eve of 23rd matrimonial aniversary. Cheers to all who read this. See you all in London on 28th March.

Gentlemen, As most of us are aware, the cocktail party at Swire House was a complete success and since, I have received a number of e-mails thanking me for my efforts. In fact, all the thanks should go to Julian Thorogood because without him, the party would not have taken place. It was a very pleasant evening, enjoyed by all.....some more than others. They know who they are but on this occassion, I'll give them a break and I wont be handing out any "Star Turn" awards. Next up is the trip to Chester by Graeme Drewery and myself to check out the hotels, so hurry home Joe Walford.....we need you.

We will meet at The Queen Hotel, Chester on Friday the 13th October evening, around 5pm, departing on Sunday 15th after breakfast. This geriatric has decided to grab some sunshine before the English weather gets set for winter. We're leaving for Cairns in late October, travelling to Townsville on something called "Coral Princess" which I understand to be a catamaran, then flying to Hobart for my wife to see the Land of ABC before descending on Sydney 9 November for a drive around the northern coast of NSW. We shall be wandering around NZ from 21 November to 4 December so be warned! (When we went to NZ in '98 Mike Kelly left the country!) The foregoing pre-supposes that I shall survive Chester, which is doubtful after Bristol! See you gentlemen in a few weeks' time. Regards to all, Maurice Burbidge

Maryann and Mark's new address, from 25th September 2000, will be 6644, Coldstream Drive, New Market, MD 21774. That's about 45 minutes west of Baltimore or Washington D.C. for those passing through. Well chaps, another meeting was held at Chester and it was judged a complete success....at least, my headache says so. There were about 27 members at Chester out of a possible 125.............making 98 who missed a really great weekend. Next year, 2001, the venue has been chosen as Portsmouth during the first weekend of October. We plan a Saturday afternoon visit to the Naval dockyard to go aboard HMS Victory and Mary Rose. Also, Jim Bird will soon be researching the possibility of dining aboard the Warrior, also berthed at the Dockyard. The British Government has recently announced a single ex-gratia payment of £10,000 to the surviving members of the British groups who were held prisoner by the Japanese during the Second World War. The scheme is being administered by The War Pensions Agency on Freeline 0800 169 22 77 or if calling from overseas +44 1253 866043. There is a full description of the 5 categories entitled to payment on the British Legion web site, www.britishlegion.org.uk, plus copies of the claim form. If anyone among the Swire Mariners knows of any Merchant Seaman then serving with CNCo., that were captured and interned by the Japanese or of their surviving widows, ( more likely ), or any British Taikoo Dockyard personnel, again including widows, please alert them to this information or contact me here in London at fjt@jssldn.co.uk with what ever information you may have. The earlier-than-forecast date has been necessitated by an unscheduled visit to the UK by the organiser(that's me folks) in March. Mike O'Keeffe

The SMA is pleased to highlight that we have a number of new members in Australia. Not only have these worthy salts taken the trouble to send their tenners by carrier 'roo to BlindStu, but currently they also seem to be the most active in participating in the facilities offered by this website. This is what the site is all about, so Come On Great Britain! Shake off those cobwebs and give a XXXX! In any case, the Web-brat is pleased to announce that Australia will no longer be considered to be upside down. Perhaps one day we'll have a true global reunion, but in the meantime our site is the best way to keep in touch, for sure - MAJB

Season's greetings chaps. Still playing with ships here in Qatar. Spent half an hour bringing in one of the HKS&T tugs last week, so that's the nearest contact with Swire's I've had recently. Oh yes, and one of the Probo's came in, the Probo Hawk, not one of ours I know but it was still rather good to be on the bridge of one of them again and not being used as target practice by Ecuadorian cargo ships. Neil Morris is still here and continues to drink beer, so that's alright then. Well done to Stu and Dark Moment for getting through another year without being carted off to the funny farm. Best wishes

A very MERRY CHRISTSMA and a HAPPY STU YEAR to all from Mark, Maryann and Katherine Beaumont. We're in UK this year again which was not intended but a complete lack of performance by the U.S. I.N.S. has occasioned this eventuality. Any drunks and skunks in the vicinity of Salcombe, Devon, over the New Year will be dealt with appropriately. Our number there is 01548 842668 (from 29th Dec to about 3rd Jan or whenever the hangover disappears).

To all SMA members and Old CNColeans everywhere. Your very own BlindStu wishes all of you and your families, A very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Keep those ballot forms etc. moving, I need more input. So far, it shows that an evening in London would be very welcome sometime during next summer and as soon as I get most ballot forms back, I will inform those interested of the arrangements. Those of you who sent me 2½ quid for a photo/phone number card, do not worry, it will arrive as soon as I receive the Chester photos from Geoff Havilland. HAPPY XMAS

Dear all, Thanks Bob Steer-I had no idea that this site existed until John Haines told me about it. He found out when he piloted Bob Wilson. I had an unfortunate accident in Ausust last year. I walked into the edge of a steel fire-door and gave myself a bad concussion. All has now healed but now I have to be examined by a trick cyclist to see if I am sane!!!! I have been off the booze for five months four days six hours and two minutes-but who is counting. We work on the system of no work no pay so I will be pleased to get back to work again. Have a good new year. I wish that ships called 'Changsha' etc had the expected crowd on board instead of others, I suppose that is the sign of the times. Regards, Mike Tidey
