Ship's Log Entries 2006

2006's log produced much in the way of international banter, and the entries below are notable for the particular enthusiasm of certain members of our group. Long may they put pen to paper, or should that be pinky to keyboard!

Thanks Stu, let us pray that the New Year brings rather more good news than bad. Felt rather dry this morning, which is strange as I thought I drank a lot of liquid last night! Beryl drove me back to the golf club this morning to collect my car so I must be getting sensible! Best Wishes to all

Gentlemen, I know a number of you are aware that Ralph Kennett is seriously ill in hospital. I just received an e-mail and I now copy it here for you all to read:- _____________________ I am unsure who knows that Ralph is very ill so I am writing to those for whom I have an email address. He is in Stroud General Hospital and has been for some time now. I visited him last Saturday and today and he is now very poorly. He has a fairly aggressive cancer. He was assessed on Friday to see if he could benefit from chemotherapy which it is his choice to have but it was decided that he is too frail. He can only tolerate iced water at the moment and so has lost a great deal of weight - not that he had a lot in the first place. He still has a wonderful zest for living and talked to me about many topics. He doesn't have much entertainment though as he's not allowed his computer or mobile. He is in Jubilee Ward and you can telephone him very easily on 070691 90005 X537 which is a direct line to his bed-side. I'm sure he would love to chat to anyone who has a few moments. If you know of anyone who knows him (I'm in touch with Peter and Elizabeth of course) please let them know. In particular does anyone have an email address for Judy? ______________________ After speaking to the SMA committee on Thursday next, I will be driving to Stroud to see him and keep him company for a short while. If you can't call him direct, I will take everyone's best wishes with me

Can't be there to see Ralph this week, Stu, but please send him my very best when you visit. Perhaps you'd take him a copy of this shot of happier days. Tell him Dark Moment remembers with great fondness his days as Captain of Coral Princess, despite the fact that chasing around Ralph's cabin trying to feed his Minor bird with chopsticks was not on my job description - MAJB

Our thanks for the many messages and good wishes, they are greatly appreciated. The operation will be on 18th Jan after a week of tests and preparation. An Additional complication found is that I have Asbestosis of the lungs incurred of course by many years of exposure in dockyards and engin rooms. It would be wise to get checked on this. Please pass to Ralphie our best wishes, and tell him we have great memories of our times with him on Taiwan and CP, and that I have never forgotten his support during the aircond problem on CP.

Gentlemen, I have received the following from Chris Nugent and she's obviously delighted to have been made an honorary member of our group. _______________ TO THE SMA I am charmed, indeed honoured, to be invited to join your illustrious group as an Honorary Member. I was a little confused at first thinking that I might be expected to do something technical like drive a boat or splice a mainbrace. I feel, with a little instruction, I could probably do the former quite well, but the latter….mmmm difficult. However, much to my relief, Mr.C. very kindly imparted the following words of wisdom to me at a brief meeting under the table in the Albert Pub after the SPO Christmas Party.…’You may be an Honorary, but basically you’re just an old fart like the rest of us’. Gentlemen – I am proud and delighted to be so. Thank you very much for welcoming me and I’ll try to behave myself. Very best wishes for 2006. Chris Nugent

Gentlemen, Yesterday, Graeme Drewery, Dudley Groves and myself paid a visit to Ralph Kennett in Stroud hospital and although he's seriously ill and lost a great deal of weight, that old spirit is there and he was still giving us a few laughs. We spent a couple of hours with him and he was very touched by the number of you who have phoned with your support from around the world. You can see the photo we took in the "Rogues Gallery" photos section. Best wishes Ralph....we think you're the greatest.

Welcome aboard Chris. Boats belong to SPO, ships belong to CNCo., just make sure who you are talking to at the time! I'm not sure about the driving bit, several people drove me mad and vice versa. As to the drinking bit, I can think of several names who could give you guidance on this, many of them live in the southern hemisphere, they are more used to it down there!

Gentlemen!what is going on?After a few bevvies under a pub table "she" is granted honorary membership by a Mr.C.Who in the hell is he?was "she"approved by the other committee members? What is happening? Please confirm A.S.A.P.that our association is an honorable one and one that is uncorruptable. Does "she"know the words of the Doxford Song? Would "she"stand a round when we are having a wee drinkie,or four? Would"she"still be standing and roaring for more after a reunion dinner.? Did "she"ever belong to the Key Club?Does "she"know what the Key Club is? Does "she"know where the Wanch is?What about the Motomachi? ALL VERY IMPORTANT questions to be answered. I dare you to appear at Lundy, those from down south will soon put the matter to rights. What about The Good Ship Venus? And finally would you understand Colin Darchs lectures and sketches? IF you can explain all the above, or buy me a gin or two,I also welcome you onboard. Bob Steer.

I am very happy to say that I will be leaving hospirtal on 5th Feb. with aortic valve installed and working OK. More good news was that the projected coronary arterey byepass did not have to made as the restriction was found to be much less than pictured on screen. The restriction will be monitored and can be threated if necessary with cathete and baloon. I urge anyone who experiences pain in the chest and arms, shootness of breath and weakness in the legs when walking up slopes or hurrnig, to get checked by a heart specialist. Again our thanks for all the messages of good cheer. Jim and Kayoko

Gentlemen, Just to advise that Ralph Kennetts funeral took place yesterday and it was attended by many SMA members who mourned the loss of Ralph alongside his family members. After the ceremony, we all drove to his house, Hazel Mill, which will always stand as his memorial, and there we ate a very nice cold buffet lunch and toasted his memory. I have been asked by Helen,John Gardners wife,to give an update on John's health, the short version is that it is simply not good.It is hard to believe they were down staying with us just a few months ago when we were out bush walking and wining and dining and generally enjoying ourselves and in just a few short months John is finding it hard to live at all.He sleeps alot through the day and night and is basically in a wheel chair if he is taken anywhere. We can be very thankful that John is free of pain. He is strong in his resolve to fight an extremely difficult time and I am sure he will be pleased to know he will not be alone in the days ahead,we will all be thinking of him and wishing Helen the desperate strength she surely needs. Their telephone Number is 02 9807 5112 Helen will answer if possible.

Barry Whitehead was farewelled today (Tue Feb 21) in a truly beautiful service. The North Chapel at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium was packed for a celebration of Barry's life. His son-in-law, Mr Tim St Quintin, set the tone with an eulogy, which was just the right mixture of sadness and humour. Barry would have been proud. Ex-Swires people present included Cyril Cocksedge, Bill Elton, Don Hutchinson, Ron Kendrick, Helen and Ken Nettleship, Bob Steer, Irene and Ron Sullivan, May and Jim Wilby and me.

OK,it's my turn. I have been sitting here listening and talking to not ALL but some famous or should I say infamous ancient mariners from the good old days aboard the Coral Princess, that wonderful ship that plied the South China Sea and Malacca straits. I was (pat myself on the back) the first to put 'white' pax on board CP in 1976.I saw this ship at the ocean terminal HK in 1975 from the star ferry, noticed the Swire logo on the funnel and called Swires HK. They put me in touch with one Ian Meffan in Japan, we communicated, he had contacts in Peking as CP had cruised there with Japanese seminar pax. We met in Peking August 1975 and made arrangements to bring Aussie's to China on CP, they gave the OK for two cruises, March & October 1976.Callum Anderson was Captain and David Fellowes C/O. MAJB was cruise director, as well as in charge of drinking beer but also excellent with a gin & tonic, I think he excelled at the latter rather than his proper job. I have also been in touch with Dudley Groves who was the one and only Captain to perform a wedding on board CP in SIN harbour in January 1982 when 2/O Graham Robson married Gabby Alger, Norman McKnee was best man & my daughter Amanda Gibson was bridemaid. When all this happened I was Manager of NRMA Travel, Sydney. Well that's enough of me for now, by the by my good spouse & I will be in SIN in June and will met up David Fellowes who is now Manager Swire Offshore in SIN. I will have a beer or three over Easter and remember these good old times. Cheers for now, Warwick Gibson Sydney. Australia. PS: To use the current Aussie tourism add" where the bloody hell are you" PPS: Sorry to hear of the passing of Ralph Kennett, he also did a stint as Captain of CP when I was on board, my wife Colleen, coudn't and still can't get her head around feeding Ralph's bird maggots with chop sticks.

Good for you, Warwick! Welcome back on board! You left many fond memories for many on 'Coral Princess', thanks to your innovative charters. Folks, Warwick is no landlubber; your web-brat just happens to have this picture in his possession, from the S.S. Kanimbla. Mr. Gibson is the chap in the middle ...

We're tempted to start a 'Coral Princess' page on this site, actually. Many a Swire seafarer had his career solidly compromised aboard the great ship. Time, perhaps, to recount such legends as the naming of 'One Sock McNee' - MAJB

I was idling through Swire stuff yesterday and came across this site. Hardly anyone will know me, and those who do will not want to but I was on the House Staff of Swires in the 1970s to the 1990s and knew quite a lot of the names which keep cropping up! SMA members should not be alarmed at some of the garbage messages that appear occasionally in this guest book.....we have not moved into the world of selling drugs or on line gambling. Some idiots have hijacked our site and think they will influence our lifestyle leaving such nonsense in here. This will all be sorted out once MAB returns from his current time "off line"

No Maurice, I've not gone completely mad but I do wish that Shawn/Carol Clarke/Elga /Lemat/Mark/Halz and Louise would just drift off into cyberspace and create havoc somewhere else. I'm afraid we are just going to have to put up with more of this, and I'm sure there'll be lots more, until MAB returns to sort it out. Hopefully, he'll be able to rescue the site from these people and others like them. Patience my friends.

Yes, sorry chaps, I'm indisposed just now but will continue to attack this spam junk with a vengeance on my return. I have written to certain parties about it so we'll see where we end up. These are 'adbots', and once this computer-generated garbage gets hold of your site address, it's hard to shake, and I may have to make some changes to our guest book make up. Just ignore it meantime. For those who know that I have had another brief run-in with the quacks, you'll be glad to hear that seven hours on the operating table has not diminished my appetite for the finer things of life. Just not allowed to have them until they let me out of this hospital, that's all. It's true, though ... Memorial Sloan Kettering does have the best looking nurses in New York. They're looking after me well, should be home in a few days.

Removed is one thing, fixed is another, Stu. I'll get to a solution soon. I'm still in the hospital, but leaving today. All going well, prognosis good as my main tumour has been determined to be benign, which is indeed good news. Another op due in July, probably, to remove smaller sites in the chest, but the pressure is off a little given this finding to date - MAJB

P.S. For obvious reasons, bit slow with the pinup this month, but it's up now - MAJB

It is with very deep sadness that I must advise of the passing of Joanna Hancock, much loved cruise staff from the 'Coral Princess' winter cruises in the 80s. Jo had a long battle with Leiomyo's Sarcoma but is now at rest. Those who knew her who might want to drop a note to husband John Porter or parents Gwen and Graham Hancock should write to 27031 Driftwood Drive, Bonita Springs, FL 34135-4320, USA. Joanna leaves two teenage children, Anna and Jonathan. Sail free, Jo - MAJB

Just returned from yet another month long visit to Perth, WA. Whilst there this time round, Jean and I caught up with Paul Thiessen and Alan Gooch and their respective better halves Connie and Susannah. Both (the men anyway)found to be in excellent form and health, gainfully employed and otherwise in fine condition. (pardon the survey jargon) Comment on wives witheld (on grounds of possible self incrimination), but otherwise found to be well. Alan and Paul asked me to pass on their best regards to all past and present Swire reprobates attending the Lundy Island bash next month. Look forward to seeing all attending on 14th/15th June.

He is very fit & well & works for SPO, also travels extensively, Tunisa, HKG, Bisbane, Perth, London etc...Also is a mad golfer, last week in Singapore he shot his best round 76, four over par - not bad for man who never held a stick until aged 35. Will celebrate his 60th in London May 2 2007 with daughter Natalie who is being married around the same time. Thought I would bring you all up to speed. Regards to all, Warwick Gibson Sydney NSW.

Great trip to Bideford and Lundy, thanks to Graeme & Co. for organizing, especially Stu. Thanks also to Colin & Barbara Darch for everything, Barbara seemed to be running a taxi service! Nice to see Frobisher in action, (no, not that sort of action!), on the bridge. The sea was like a millpond, so the crossing was great. Some folk walked the whole length of the island, others made the halfway wall and some didn't get beyond the pub!!! Not sure if Stu is awarding any prizes for this trip but he might consider a certain retired Commodore who barged into Colin's bathroom, unfortunately already occupied by one of the ladies! There was some revenge later in the evening when the same Commodore, who shall remain nameless, was making himself comfortable before leaving the hostelry where we had dined. The landlord was of an inclination differing with most of us and had one or two unusual postcads displayed in the "Gents", a couple of our ladies decided to inspect said postcards unaware of the Commodore's residence there........should I go on! I think the committee should remember our advancing years when deciding upon our next expedition, perhaps a day in the Cairngorms!

Whilst recuperating from the rigours of Lundy Island I read the latest Swire Marine News. A very touching idiots guide to stability at the bottom of page 3! (Didn't GM used to mean the distance between the centre of gravity and the metacentre?). Had a similar experience to Hamilton some years ago when Chefoo loaded ilmenite sand at Bunbury and returned to Fremantle to complete northbound loading with a GM of around 10 feet, (in old money), and a fairly strong NW'ly blowing. Ship was so stiff we had to make an unusual course to round Rottnest Is., heading north until clear enough to make an extremely sharp alteration for the run down to Fremantle entrance. Had the pleasure of sailing with Bill Worrall and Norman Feltham ,(page 32), on "Taikoo" in 1955, both were character. Norman seemed never without one of his rolled fags in his mouth, even when he jumped into the water to drag up the Mate who had fallen in from a breeches buoy arrangement, Norman surfaced with a very wet fag in one hand and the Mate in the other! Now I'm feeling even more ancient!!

Gentlemen , Unfortunately I have to report the death of yet another old CNCo hand and this time it was Chief Engineer Phil Pereria who passed away in Canada on the 10th June age 86. The reason for his death has been given as old age. I am sure there are plenty who remember Phil and I for one sailed with him on the Taikoo built Kweilin and I understood that on retirement from CNCo he moved to Vancouver Canada.

I am required to reenter the hallowed halls of Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York for Stage 2 of The Beaumont Reality Show (or should that be, Check) on 19th July. Chest surgery this time. If I survive it, I'll probably be laid low for a couple of weeks eating atrocious food but the first August beer will taste somewhat special, I'm sure. Thanks for your concern. I remember with great fondness our chinwags in your cabin where I could occasionally decipher your features through clouds of white pipe smoke. All the best to you both - MAJB

Anyone who sailed with Phil Pereira might remember his ritual with curry lunch? It used to be curry on Wednesdays and Sundays in CNCo., Phil would take the rice, tnen send for the cold plate of the day, heap the cold meat around the rice then cover the whole lot with the curry, (no matter what the flavour). By this time some of us were waiting for the coffee! Apart from being my one-time neighbour, I enjoyed sailing with him, but then I wasn't an engineer! I think he was a hard task master.

The long pause since the Ancient Mariner's previous entry is a splendid opportunity for yet one more 'commerical break'. To both my fans-- thank you gentlemen for your support in purchasing copies of my novel the 'Babylon Boat'-- ( ex Lulu.com)you will be pleased to hear that a second title - another novel - called 'Sell the Pig and Buy me out' will be available in a couple of weeks time. ( As before any profits produced by these works will be given to the Marine Society- the Sea Faring library people.) It is hoped by the time this new title is ready for sale the muddle presently going on with Amazon.com; Barnes and Noble ; and Corners will be sorted out and one will be able buy from them as well. A third title is expected to be ready for Christmas stocking filling. Finally, before I get back to my key board, a brief word of thanks for the 'Web Brat ,Stu, and others for doing so much to keep this excellent site and association going. No,sadly I didnt sail weth Phil - but I am startled to calculate that it is now 51 years since I and the Ancient Mariner supped gimlets, and sailed, aboard the Taiyuan after the old lad's salvage exploits aboard the Taikoo.

My younger daughter-in-law is due to launch her second in September so we shall have seven grandchildren to look after us in due course. The nearest I have to a sailor is that three gran'daughters are keen canoeists! To add cream to the jam, my golf handicap has been cut to 15, which is what is was when I left Hong Kong 27 years ago!! Went to George Moore's funeral yesterday, Julie & Trevor Kay Russell were also there. A good crowd of locals, it seems George was quite active in the church and assosciated groups. Very nautical flavour to the service, George originally went to sea as an R/O at a very young age in 1943 so he saw some of the nasties of WW2. A nice competent chap and good to work with.

Haven't been out there for yonks; rumour has it they've even moved the airport..... anyway, if any SMA friends are reading this who are IN Hong Kong over the next week - I'm there until the 28th - do please be in touch. I'm staying with my cousin in Happy Valley: the tel.no there is 2575 7247 c/o Phillipa and Tony Shale.

Kiwis : Does anyone have a contact email address for Nick Edwards, Colin Taylor, or Nigel Drummond. I understand from David Ewings that Nick may have a list of contact details for all ex-CNCo/SPO boaties in "the land of the long white cloud", I think I have long lost the spelling of "Aoteoroa". As I want someone (preferably a ginger beer) to have a look at a H & M cover risk in Windy City (Wellington) within the next few days, an early response would be much appreciated. Yes fellow members, another year has passed and the Falkirk reunion was a great success with 27 members putting in an appearance. I did hear that John McCall also popped in to say hello but didn't stay. It was a wonderful weekend, enjoyed by all and thank goodness, the legendary Scottish rain held off. Credit must go to Glen Docherty for his efforts in keeping us all together and who would forget the wonderful performance on guitar by Falkirk resident, Terry Hunter. Unfortunately, he didn't know any Led Zeplin songs but still managed to motivate yours truly. The racket was appreciated, I think, by all who saw us motor on by. Next year, it's an afternoon of wandering around the Roman sites of Bath, followed by an evening meal in a castle, buxom serving wenches thrown in. I somehow know that Le Cloche will like that. It has been agreed that the summer outing is to be another Thames cruise and this time from Henley. It wont be long now before we can all apply for a Thames pilot licence.

He made Manly's team of the century. In his three tests against the All Blacks & Springboks the Aussie won all three. What an incredible memory the Ancient Mariner has depite his early taste for 'gimlets' when a mere 'wee lad' thinly disguised as a fourth officer! The 17th was indeed our 50th wedding anniversary and was duly celebrated with a gathering of almost all 18 of our descendants and attachments from all over the place. The old Taiyaun crowd was properly toasted .Thanks Maurice and the remaining other'few' who were there and remembered. Cheers the time has flown so pleasantly.

How nice to get such a welcome to the Colonies! We are staying at Cowaramup where my daughter lives, about 12 kms north of Margaret River. Daughter came out of hospital yesterday so we are on a bit of a nursing trip. Nice place but no bloody pub, not that I can afford to drink much, one large and one small beer on Sunday cost $11.50 in MRiver!Decided I shall become a wino for the next three weeks.Weather is great once the early morning chill goes off but I'm a bit wary of going out into the garden, the black cockatoos keep dropping ruddy big nuts from the trees!Son-in-law is off selling wine to some poor unfortunates so I am being despatched to MR to do the shopping,(pubs down there should be open).

Just heard of the passing of Jim Corkhill. He came to HK & Japan on a temporary posting from Sydney, and stayed for around ten years! He was for many years on the CNCo desk in the Agency and did a great deal to prepare HK shippers for containerisation. I had the pleasure of working with Jim in CNCo. and Matson. Jim could sell a 'fridge to an Eskimo or central heating to somone from Timbuctoo; the word "can't" was not in his vocabulary, everything was possible with Jim, it just needed a little extra effort! A sad loss.

Trying to ignore the rude comments from a certain elderly Engineer reclining just north of Sydney. Instead of one invalid to look after I have had two, my wife tried vaulting a cattle fence up at Wollaroo,(where?), and has been limping with an 8cm gash in her leg for two weeks. Offthis pm to view the Margaret River go-cart race, (assume Brian Bell won't be there). Would you believe they close the main highway for it! Finishing line is the Corner Bar at the Margaret River Hotel, I shall be there.Leaving for the land of Blair on Sunday.

I wonder where the race started from, the same pub??I wonder if he was there for the start as well??? It's a shame that Bob is too young for the Aussie Cricket team and the Ancient Mariner is too old to play for the poms. Bought a similar receptacle to that of the Ashes trophy from a $2.00 shop the other day, filled it full of iron filings and got $1.99 on Ebay. Cricket is very popular here in sunny Queensland, a local lad thinks playing for the ashes has replaced 2-up in the smoking areas of the pub. Are Bob and Maurice the only two remaining CNCo people with at least one finger left for the old keyboard. By the way, I went to school with Margaret Rivers, and Bob is definitely living in the ice age, looking at the latest weather reports. Heading down south by boat next week have a dozen reds ready if I get the chance i will drop by and drink them, Bob. What's your phone number at least I can ring and abuse you when I pass Booral.

I was thinking of that posh place North of Sydney called B something Water, should have known they wouldn't have allowed Steer to live there. The race started, one hour late, at the top of the town, by which time it was difficult to focus my camera. A bloody tall fence was put up around the front of the Margaret River hotel, not sure if this was to keep the cliental in or the go-carts out, it failed on both counts! Arrived "home" yesterday afternoon 36 hours after leaving my daughter's place, Emirates must use steam-power I think but all the drinks were free and food v.good. Tony, if you do get to Bowral I suggest you throw one of the reds at Bob for me! Cheers

I bet you were worried about the cricket yesterday Bob? Not a bad effort for "Dad's Army" as Denis Lillee called them! Would you believe that 3 days after arriving back some DOF drove his mobility scooter into the back of Beryl's legs, cut the right leg and laid the achilles tendon bare, (but fortunately did't break it), four hours and 14 stitches later....Immobilised for at least two weeks so guess who chief bottle washer is! Where the hell is my b...y amah? Following his apology for the slave trade Tony Blair is next going to Oz to apologise for transporting all those cons!
