She's here! Cathay Pacific's founding aircraft ... the DC-3 "Betsy"! Click on the picture to see a brief, automated slideshow of her history; just sit back, listen to the music and relax. You'll return here. "Betsy" flies again!
This page is dedicated to Peter Sutch, ex-Chairman of Cathay Pacific and friend of many in the SMA, who was taken from us far too early, in March 2002. R.I.P., P.D.A.S.
Welcome to our second 'flightsim' page. From here we'll be linking for download any and all 'add-on' work for Microsoft's Flight Simulator FS2002 featuring the aircraft or operations of Cathay Pacific Airways, past and present.
FS2002 was released in October 2001 and is a great technological improvement over the previous version; we can expect exciting, sophisticated 'add-ons' as flightsim developers get to grips with it. Accordingly, we'll be listing all new work relating to the legendary Kai Tak Airport with, perhaps, the occasional reference to Chek Lap Kok, as below! In other words, if it's in or near Hong Kong, you'll find it here. Kai Tak remains open in the 'flightsim' world! And if you're not familiar with the community spirit amongst the flightsim brethren, you might be surprised to find that almost all downloads linked from this page are free! Please note that all files are tested in FS2002 'Professional'; some gauges may not be present in the 'Standard' version.
Almost all pictures on this page are FS2002 screenshots, created by Mark Beaumont for this site. Send us yours!
We'll be working to include links specifically relevant to Kai Tak and Hong Kong, and will welcome all input in this regard. Keep the legend alive! Just a pity the bar closed ...
AIRCRAFT
You're cleared to fly the first of our revised "classics":
Douglas DC-3 'Betsy'
Based on Jan Visser's legendary DC-3 model for FS2000, updated for FS2002, this package includes both her familiar original livery (see top of page) and later colours circa 1952. Transparent cabin windows (with authentic gunports in the early version - they were pioneering days!), full nightlighting, lit 3D interior with opening passenger door, boarding steps/ladder and other details. Includes FS2002 panel by Jorge 'Eko' Salas and FS2002 lights fix by Paul Pridwales. Repaints by Mark Beaumont. Available at Avsim.com (CPABETSY.ZIP, 7.33MB, linked 21/03/03)
Douglas DC-3 'Betsy' Cargo
This file, exclusively available here at Swiremariners.com, presents 'Betsy' in cargo configuration. Both doors open on this version, the seats are stripped out, cargo netting is in place and there are pallets both inside the aircraft and outside as appropriate. Let's hope it's all gin. Requires CPABETSY.ZIP to be installed first. All Jan Visser's work again, repaint by Mark Beaumont (CPABETSY2.ZIP, 3.10MB, added 28/03/03)
Mark Beaumont has also done paints of "Betsy" in most of her non-CX liveries. Click on the our slideshow to learn more of her history.
Douglas DC-3 'Nikki' Cathay's second DC-3 'Nikki' is also available as a texture set only; the 'Betsy' file above must be installed first. 1952 livery by Mark Beaumont (CPANIKKI.ZIP, 2.45MB, linked 25/3/03)
We can't wait to slap some paint on the DC-3 in FS2004 ... coming soon!

All systems work as per the real aircraft. It comes as part of the legendary MAAM Douglas R4D-6 package, complete with a spine-tingling soundset. The 'plane is available on CD or through direct download from flightsim sites, and requires registration; 100% of your donation goes toward the restoration of the R4D-6 (DC-3) of the Naval Air Transport Service.
Douglas DC-4 panel DC-4 Photo Panel Package. Real photographs give interior surround views including wings and cabin. Gauges by James Underwood, Ernie Kennedy and Kevin Trinkle. From originals by Tom Gibson and Petros Protopapas. By James Underwood. Available at Flightsim.com(dc4jcuv2.zip, 5.24MB)
Lockheed L-188 Electra panel Kevin Trinkle's marvellous Electra control panel (this is version 5) is included in the L-188 package, downloadable above.
Convair CV-880 panel The Convair on this page comes with panels, but this FS2000 panel by Matthias Lieberecht, based on graphics by Mick Sarbutts, is worth a try. It's realistic and works well in FS2002. Download directly here.
Boeing B707-320 panel by Paul Golding. This excellent panel includes 3 different forward views. Also included are things like low oil pressure lights, leading edge flap indicators, GPS, working flight director, landing gear rumble sounds, increased wind noise whilst the landing gear is down, the sound of the trim wheel rattling as it moves, visual warnings for disconnection of the autopilot, GPWS and below glideslope flashing warnings, First Officer confirmation of gear up and gear down, altitude callout from 500 feet down to 10 feet, etc. It comes packaged with a new FS2002 airfile for HJG aircraft. Boeing B747-400 panel Photorealistic panel for the Boeing 747-400 series by Christophe Jeanne, made with many FS2002 default gauges and other gauges from different authors; all are freeware. Download it from Avsim.com(7474pcj.zip, 973KB, linked 20/6/02)
Boeing B777 panel by Tony D'Ambrosio. Tony's RealCRT 'shareware' gauges are state-of-the-art for flightsim. Seventeen well-spent bucks gets you registered to use his gauges which are utilised in many other freeware panels. Once you've tried them, it's hard to go back. Load flightplans into your FMC, engage your autopilot and consume a beverage or two whilst you view your vector and track on your ND gauge. This is a fine example of the 'glass' cockpit, with Rose and Arc ND modes and three functional EICAS modes. Find it (ta777_17.zip, 929KB) at Avsim.com(linked 2/3/02 - see also his B747-400 panel, ta747_18.zip, 928KB, from the same source)
Navigation Data v1.3 by Tony D'Ambrosio.
This is a freeware database utility for panels based on the RealCRT Gauge Series, needed to acivate Navigation Display Map and Route (MR) modes. Essential stuff for both the RealCRT panels above. Download it (2.79MB, nd2k_13.zip) from Avsim.com(linked 2/3/02)

SCENERY
Scenic stuff to add to your Cathay flightsim experience:
Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok International Airport Thomas Kwong's comprehensive new upgrade for CLK boasts a high level of accuracy, detailed airport and tarmac, parking positions, docking bridges, taxiway centerlines and taxiway signs, detailed control towers, terminal building, cargo terminal and airport buildings, Cathay City, catering service buildings and HAECO, night lighting and much more. Download at Avsim.com (vhhh_tk.zip, 10.79MB). Includes detailed charts (linked 22/11/01)
Watch this site for Thomas' new version of Kai Tak for FS2002 ... no release date known, but we hear it's in the works! Go for it, TK! In the meantime, please note that his FS2000 scenery works acceptably in FS2002. Don't be without Kai Tak! See our FS2000 page, below.
Hong Kong Kai Tak International Airport Roger Mole has created a very simple version of Kai Tak for FS2002 which includes navaids, comms facilities and an AFCAD file. Download at Simviation.com (VHHK_1.zip, 680KB). Install carefully in case you should wish to deinstall it at a later stage: layout is approximate and frequencies are fictional. Rumour has it, however, that Roger is working on a much more accurate version! (linked 18/12/02)
Update: Roger has released a file giving accurate approach frequency and markers for the Kai Tak IGS/ILS, together with your very own chequerboard. "Chequer" it out! (ktak_igs.zip, 0.98MB, linked 5/05/03)
A somewhat expensive commercial version of Kai Tak and immediate surrounds, titled "Ultimate Hong Kong Simulation", is available from Flightsoft. Reports to date indicate that Thomas' freeware version is more accurate, but the choice is yours. Rival software house Samsoft also produces a payware version called "Hong Kong Today 2002".
Hong Kong Autogen Scenery This excellent embellishment by Eddie Chan adds many generic buildings to Kowloon and north Hong Kong Island using FS2002's autogen, with minimal impact on frame rates. Works with default, Roger Mole's scenery and even Thomas Kwong's (as shown here) with only minor conflicts. Download at Avsim.com(hongkong.zip, 436KB, linked 31/12/02).
Hong Kong Terrain Mesh Terrain mesh guru Raimondo Taburet has reworked his High Resolution Hong Kong Mesh for FS2002 and produced a brand new 30 arc/sec GAIA mesh for exclusive download here. Thanks, Ray! (hkgaia.zip, 102KB, added 16/7/02) Check back here for an even more detailed version based on highly accurate NASA information in time.
Hong Kong Landclass Ian Thatcher of www.oceaniasim.org has produced excellent landclass coverage for Hong Kong within a file that covers China, Korea and Taiwan. Works well with Ray's mesh, above (extralc.zip. 2.5MB, linked 7/5/03)
AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE)
Cathay Pacific AI Traffic v1.0 developed by Steve Hammerton. This package contains 'TrafficTools' flight plans
for all Cathay Pacific flights based on 2001/02 published schedules. Both this file (cx_tt10.zip, 21KB) and Lee Swordy's revolutionary TrafficTools programme (ttools12.zip, 249KB) are available at Flightsim.com(linked 18/3/02)
Aaron Clark has packaged Steve's plans and all the aircraft to go with those plans (by Jun Kazuma, see below) together with an AFCAD file for VHHH, all in one download called Cathay Pacific V1.0 Pack (cp10.zip, 6.41MB, linked 20/6/03)
Lee Swordy's complementary AFCAD programme (afcad11.zip, 611KB) is available at the major sites and you'll also find there the following choice of AI/gate modifications drawn up for Hong Kong airports:

VHHH (CLK) - vhhh1.zip, 5.59KB, by Aaron Clark VHHH (CLK) - vhhh1vfh.zip, 7KB, by Victor Holderness VHHH (CLK) - vhhh.zip, 55KB, by Boyd Barker VHHH (CLK) - vhhhgates.zip, 6.33KB, by Richard Mohammed VHHH (CLK) - vhhh1.zip, 10.9KB, by Jean-Pierre Hesse VHHH (CLK) - vhhh_charles.zip, 45.3KB, by Charles Cheng VHHH (CLK) - afc vhhh.zip, 32.2KB, by Silteodevie Timisela VHHH (CLK) - vhhh_afcad_flightsoft.zip, 9KB, by Kar-Lok Wong (optimised for "Ultimate Hong Kong" Simulation by Flightsoft)
What's more, Project AI has a user-friendly Cathay Pacific 'AI' package which you can load up into FS2002. You'll need their 'Base Installer' too.
A simpler approach might be to use models of the 744 and 773 made by FSPainter and painted in Cathay livery by Joet Djuhari (aircraft-cx.zip, 0.97MB). In addition, there are three passenger Boeings - configured as 744, 743 and 742 (cx_fsp_747-400_rr.zip, 811KB; cx_fsp_743rr.zip, 1.01MB; cx_fsp_742_rr.zip, 1.24MB) or two 744F Cargo versions, all painted by Jun Kazama (cx_fsp_744f_rr.zip, 1.00MB, fsp_747_cathf.zip, 540KB). You can find all these files at trusty old Avsim.com
Makoto Imamura has painted up the FSPainter 744 as B-HOY, "Asia's World City" for AI use (fsp_b7474rr_cath.zip, 361KB, linked 12/01/03)
Boeing B747-200F
The cargo FS Painter aircraft is painted up in the ex-Air Hong Kong 742F CX livery - from the Manchester/Hong Kong route - by Mike Bailey. Configured for AI traffic (fsp_747_cathf.zip, 540KB, linked 8/12/02)
777 fan? Grab Michael Pearson's repaints of the 777-300 and 777-200, both flyable and for AI, from Avsim.com(cpa_777_2-pack.zip, 540KB). Day textures only. You'll need the aircraft and base textures from www.fspainter.projectai.com
Jonathan Hartana has repainted the FS Painter 772 as B-HND (CX772FSPainter.zip, 690KB, linked 30/6/03)
Martin McCormick has put together some Cathay AI repaints - three 747s and a 777 - for Burkhard Renk's payware "My Traffic" which are available on his own interesting site at www.tdbscotland.co.uk/mytraffic
Need some Airbuses? Michael Pearson has painted up the FSPainter A330-300, A340-300
and A340-600 models in Cathay livery for AI use, although they are flyable too. Day textures only (cpa_airbus_3pack.zip, 1.07MB). Requires FSPainter Airbus Base Pack (abwb.zip, 7.38MB). Both files available at Avsim.com
At the same site, you'll find Jun Kazama's great FSPainter repaints of the A330-300 (cx_fsp_a333.zip, 954KB), A340-300 (cx_fsp_a343.zip, 1.33MB) and A340-600 for AI use (cx_fsp_a346.zip, 1.02MB).
Joet Dhujari has repainted the FSPainter A330 as one of a set of three. Go to Simviation.com (FSP_A330_RR.zip, 1.56MB, linked 28/02/03)
ATC (AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL)
A key feature of FS2002 is the interactive ATC system, which allows you to fly in a fairly realistic environment; ATC recognises and interfaces with the 'AI' traffic around you.
Ken Pryor has set up specific ATC recognition for Kai Tak. You'll need the freeware EditVoicePack by Lars Møllebjerg to run his file, which will be automatically installed when you download this. Updates are automatic whenever you run the software. All good stuff and not too complex.
Kai Tak Approach, Aerodrome, Aircraft Parking and Radio Charts Phil Parker ATC has put together a useful page of essential charts for all Kai Tak fans, together with a good satellite image of Hong Kong. Go to his
site to find and view these good quality images (linked 28/11/01)
MISCELLANEOUS GOODIES
After two false starts in the FS2000 era, there is once again a "virtual" Cathay out there. Fly with other Hong Kong fans at cpavirtual.org aboard A330s, A340s, B747s and B777s. You'll find many of our better screenshots on the CPVA site.
You might also want to take a look at the new Kaitak Pacific Airlines, another relevant 'virtual' site, at www.vkpa.org
Enthusiast Lorenzo Lombardi has been kind enough to send us an update of the current CX Fleet List with types, regs, intro dates and engine choices. See it here(updated 20/3/02).
If you've been listening to the legendary Cathay in-cabin music while surfing this page, we found it at last: Barry White's "Love's Theme", from 1973. You can just smell that nullah, can't you ... ah, memories ...
Kai Tak Landing Video If you'd like to get an idea of what a landing at Kai Tak looks like in flight simulator, download Naresh Gurung's video: shot from the jumpseat of a 744 and playable in Windows Media Player or FS2002 formats. Get the file at
Avsim.com (ng-kaitak-landing.zip, 6.09MB, linked 11/11/02)
MORE FLYING THINGS
We include here a few special non-CX extras.
There are many airlines well-known to Hong Kong and the list is too long to include them all on this site. Dragonair, however, is very close to Cathay Pacific and we offer here a link to a typical aircraft, an A320-200, of which the airline has eight; particularly, as this flightsim model by 'Project Airbus' is quite excellent and CX don't fly the A320!
Airbus A320-232 Dragonair (pa_a320_dragonair_102932.zip, 6.43MB, available at Project Airbus) This GMAX aircraft features an accurately modelled exterior with photorealistic livery, full animations including flaps and slats, airbrakes, landing gears, etc., as well as a fully-featured Virtual Cockpit, wing vortices effects, realistic flight dynamics and a separately downloadable sound-set (pa_a320_cfm56_sounds.zip, 22.66MB). Requires Peter Dowson's FSUIPC. By Michel Theriault/Project Airbus.
There is a similar 'plane available in Philippine Airlines colours (pr320pb2.zip, 8.45MB) by Peter Binamira/Project Airbus, should you prefer Manila to Shanghai ...
As stated on our FS2000 page, Cathay has no helicopters but we gave you one anyway. Here's another from the HK Govt. There's nothing like having a handy means of getting to the "Lamma Hilton" for Sunday lunch ...
AS-332L2 Super Puma 'Hong Kong Government Flying Services SAR' (as332rhk_v3.zip, 8.37MB, available at Avsim.com, updated 19/04/03) This helicopter was designed with FSDS 2.0 for FS2002.

and Hover Gauge by Arne Bartels. NEW Fire Attack System
Panel by Arne Bartels with inflight weightshift during
work with the Fire Attack system.
Aerostar Super 700 'Spirit of Kai Tak'
The Aerostar Super 700 is the World's fastest piston twin
aircraft. The "Spirit of Kai Tak" competed in and won the
London to Sydney Air Race in March/April 2001. Even though
it bore a USA registration, the team actually was based in
Hong Kong (hence the dragon livery and name). At times during
the race they were actually recording over 300 knots airspeed!
Find this model at Avsim.com (aerostar_spirit_of_kaitak.zip, 4.55MB) Please also visit author Mark Dickinson's site for updates.
Peter Sutch was closely involved with the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital. We draw attention to this worthy charity by highlighting three ORBIS DC-10s for flight simulation.
McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital
Modeled by FFX/SGA, this model features dynamic shine, interior wing views, all flight control surfaces animated, opening passenger doors, opening cargo doors and galley service doors, 3D fan blades modeled on all three engines and animated flight crew. Hope they're not too excited ... ORBIS textures by Michel Karam. Requires FFX/SGA base pack, both files available at Avsim.com(ffxsgadc10_10.zip, 7.18MB, ffxdc1010orbis.zip, 2.52MB, linked 27/07/03)
Another version of this important aircraft is painted up by Hiroaki Kubota on an FSPainter model. Get it at Avsim.com(fsp_dc10_orbis.zip, 2.06MB, linked 21/01/03)
An extremely detailed visual model of an earlier Orbis livery, by the Freeware Flight Group, boasts very accurate flight dynamics. Model design and animations are by Kamal Kerba/Steve Reyling, master textures by Jaco Du Preez/Chris Mueller, flight dynamics Herve Sors and documentation by Steve Reyling.
Find this model at Avsim.com(ffg_orbis_dc10-10.zip, 3.69MB)
These are early days, so please bookmark this page and return here later for updates. Unlike our FS2000 page, most downloads listed on this page will be linked rather than hosted on our own server - unless they are our own, proprietory repaints - as file sizes are becoming much bigger with the advancing technology. Should you find any dead or broken links, please advise us. Thanks. In the meantime, note that many FS2000 aircraft can be imported into FS2002 (some that can't be right now will be updated later, as known) and if you haven't just come from there, our original and extensive CX flight simulator page is a 'must see' at:
The page remains a unique and comprehensive collection of Cathay Pacific and Kai Tak memorabilia for FS2000, and for general interest. FS2000 ain't dead yet, and will get cheaper!
Some important 'FS' links (if only they'd pay us a referral!):
Avsim.com - one of the leading flightsim sites and a 'must' to visit. Simviation.com - a well laid-out site with an extensive library. Flightsim.com - another significant site for news and downloads.
FS Navigator - integrated moving nav map and flight planner. FS Meteo - extremely accurate real time weather data. FS Works Group - awesome clouds and more by Chris Willis. FS Flightmax - real weather radar with extensive features.
Visit the airline itself for all the latest news about CX:
All the pictures on this page are FS2002 screenshots by Mark Beaumont, reduced in size to 410 pixels wide. To get an idea of what FS2002 might look like on your computer, take a look at these 1024 pixel images. Right click on each title to open the pictures in new windows:
Keen flightsimmers please note: many of the 'FS2002' add-ons uploaded to the Web to date are simply basic updates of FS98 or FS2000 models. They MAY fly in a straight line in FS2002, but the beauty of FS2002 is in its innovations: dynamic virtual cockpits, reflective surfaces, special effects, etc. The default aircraft rock. Don't expect such complexity from all freeware add-on aircraft.
