That famous Kai Tak approach: FS2004 screenshot by Darth Mop
Welcome to our third Cathay Pacific 'flightsim' page. From here we link for download any and all 'add-on' work for Microsoft's Flight Simulator FS2004 (which was released in July 2003) featuring the aircraft or operations of Cathay Pacific Airways, past and present.
Always wondered what all those dials were for at the sharp end? Now is your chance to find out! All systems are modelled ...
You'll also find much more of interest at our pages for previous versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator, linked here:
Note that many of the add-on aircraft designed in GMAX and FSDS2 for FS2002 will work perfectly well in FS2004, as indeed will certain FSDS models. Do check out the FS2000 page too; there is some useful reference material there.
Many of the download links on this page are to the excellent resource Avsim.com. The first time you visit there you will need to register to use the library - a painless procedure. Thereafter you should get straight in every time you subsequently visit.
Let's start with some real aircraft:

SCENERY (add-on airports, mesh, autogen, and AFCAD files)
Please note that the following versions of Kai Tak VHHX offer several choices, but cannot be used together. Select the add-on most suited to your requirements:
Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport (VHHX - late 1940s) The later, better known Kai Tak Airport was expanded from the Japanese airfield constructed during WWII. Difficult and dangerous at best, eventually the decision was made to build a completely new runway on landfill out into the water, as found in other downloads below. This version, put together by Alex D. Nicolson with extensive input from Capt. Charles 'Chic' Eather, offers pilots the original airport. Once installed, please note that this cannot be activated in your scenery library together with the more modern airport; it is an alternative for those who love to fly historic Hong Kong in classic propliners. You can easily switch between the two, however. Download here, (kaitak_184898.zip, 2.64MB, linked 14/3/06)
Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport (VHHX - 1963) This is propliner guru Tom Gibson's great rendition of Kai Tak circa 1963, when Cathay had only two Electras and one Convair. Kowloon Bay has yet to be filled in, and the runway is only 8405 ft long. Includes mesh files by Holger Sandmann and charts of the era scanned by Chic Eather. Navaids backdated to the early 60's, except the IGS for runway 13 is included although not actually installed until 1974. Curving approach lights will help you find the runway. Chek Lap Kok airport has been removed. The IGS and other approaches created by Jim Vile. The AI aircraft will follow the curved approach to runway 13 in good weather or bad. Visit www.calclassic.com for period AI aircraft. Download Kai Tak '63 here, (kaitak63.zip, 5.88MB, linked 27/4/06)
'9Dragons' Hong Kong Kai Tak VHHX (1990s) This phenomenal add-on scenery package recreates Hong Kong International Airport (Kai Tak VHHX), as it was in the 1990's. Includes the areas of Kowloon, Hong Kong and Chek Lap Kok. Custom autogen and approximately 800 square miles of photoreal terrain - both day and night textures - enabling the accurate recreation of the descent, approach and landing into Kai Tak using the IGS Checkerboard Approach. Includes very comprehensive documentation and charts, together with extensive historical information and many other extras. A MileHigh Production (www.MileHighProductions.cwhnetworks.com) by Marcus Thompson, Frabrizio Pascucci, Eddie Chan and other contributors; released 3/1/08 and updated 1/2/08, as per the files below. See FlyHalf's wonderful video of this epic production at YouTube.
The following four files are required to install this scenery:
'9Dragons' Hong Kong Kai Tak VHHX (1990s) - version 2.1 update
Get this update too. Improves two issues with 9Dragons. Fixes the "blurries" of the ground textures. Now you will have crisp, clear hi-res photo terrain for the city of Kowloon and along the shoreline of Hong Kong Island. Also, the bright white airport lighting is reduced to a more suitable level. Must already have 9Dragons V2 installed. This update will not work with version 1. By Marcus Thompson, Frabrizio Pascucci, Eddie Chan. Download here(9dv2-1.zip, 1.64MB, linked 1/4/08)

This enhancement is designed to compliment the 9Dragons version of the old Kai Tak Airport (VHHX), above. One of the World's busiest harbours will get even busier as this package adds a number of AI ships sailing near the airport and the dock areas, adding visual interest to the Harbor which is already well populated with static ships. You will see a beautiful Yacht, several container ships, a tramp steamer and the SS Ile de France Cruise ship - all arriving and/or departing the area. A properly installed 9Dragons Kai Tak scenery is required. Models used are by Phil Crowther and Mitsuya Hamaguchi (Hama). A few technical notes are included if you wish to experiment with adding AI ships to your own scenery. This enhancement is for FS2004 only. Please unzip to a temporary folder and follow the easy installation instructions. Compiled for your flying enjoyment by David "Opa" Marshall. Download here(ai_kt_hb.zip, 2.35MB, linked 26/1/08)
Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport VHHX (1998) Jim Vile has done a wonderful job in creating AI traffic for Kai Tak that really works as it should in FS2004. Runway 13 is a full IGS/LDA Precision Approach and operates under both VMC and IMC airport conditions for AI Planes. Runway 31 operates properly under both VMC and IMC airport conditions for AI Planes. Includes checkerBoard and curved approach lights for Runway 13, jetways to the new main terminal, new and additional building scenery, new concrete textures for the ILS antennas and checkerboard DME shacks, and new control towers. Taxiways are tweaked for fluid ground operations. All transitions to the approaches are written for the pilot flying the user aircraft; many different type approaches for the user aircraft are interfaced into the GPS receiver; a different type of AFCAD Airport places localizer, glideslopes and DMEs in their correct position. Approach transistion charts included for both runway 13 and 31. Optional Zip files for removing VHHH completely, adding flightplans, AI Plane IGS 13 3rd party scenery and proper approach charts. The highlight, however, is the implementation of a new type of approach for AI traffic to runway 13 with the 47' right turn to final at the checkerboard. Includes high definition mesh by Holger Sandmann. Download here, (kaitak98.zip, 5.62MB, linked 23/4/06)
Hong Kong Kai Tak International Airport (VHHX)
Alternatively, this package represents a complete momento of the famous airport, which closed in the real world in 1998 and is now almost completely destroyed. The scenery itself contains full IGS/ILS data including the famous and difficult IGS approach to Runway 13. Most of the airport infrastructure is in place together with most of the key features in the surrounding area. This scenery does not yet have replacements for the default terminal buildings - these will come at a later date. Includes AFCAD file, IALs, ASIRs, Approach Charts and a real-life BBC video of a CX 747 landing at Kai Tak. Created by Roger Mole. One of the highlights of our development of Cathay aircraft for flight simulation has been to hear from Captain Charles "Chic" Eather. Chic joined the Roy Farrell Export-Import Company, the forerunner of CPA in 1946 and logged some 5,000 flying hours on both "Betsy" and "Nikki", Cathay's second DC-3. Chic now flies his beloved "Betsy" in flight simulation! Since his retirement in 1975 he has written three books about his life with Cathay. Most recently, he has placed both "Syd's Pirates" and "Airport of the Nine Dragons" on CD-ROM. Visit Chic's own website at www.chingchic.com to learn more, or read this press release.
