The Time of the Ancient Mariner

A familiar face within the SMA Ship's Log is that of The Ancient Mariner, Maurice Burbidge.

Maurice has recently armed himself with a scanner. It is likely that much of interest will now emerge from his sea chest. We think it prudent, therefore, that The Ancient Mariner should have his own page in order to protect the innocent. Besides which, it'll be easier for the British Museum to print it out and stick it on the wall. The comments are Maurice's. Thanks, AM, for these worthy contributions to the SMA site.

These upright chaps are, from left to right, me, Dickie Frappell, Capt. Yorkie Campbell, Ben Aldiss and Mike Keys on "Taiyuan", 1955.

In Kobe, 1955: AM, Ben Aldiss and the late Mickey Seale. "Taiyuan".

How we age! Ben Aldiss with A.M.'s sons; Roger (with Ben) is now 45.

Who are these "innocents"? On the back of Pic 1 I had written "Yokohama 1962" so must have been on 'Chefoo'.

Recognize A.M. and then the Kobe/Osaka Agent? 'Chungking' 1968.

Identify the "Arab". 'Chunking' 1968, Phil Pereira on my right, 2/E/O (?) on my right.

The Ancient Mariner aboard one of his smaller commands.

Nisbet, Bill Keown (Yokohama agent), a very young Mark Leese, A.M. and C/E Jimmy Phillips.

Not U-Boat men but what properly dressed deck officers wear when forced to work in drydock! Ben Aldiss and A.M., 'Taiyuan' 1955/6.

Shippers's party on 'Chefoo'. Trying to convince my wife it was safe for them to take me ashore.

On the left, a couple of young faces from the past: Gomperte and Hargreaves.

Rare sight: two Supt. Engineers on the bridge. Bill Adams and Jimmy Murie on 'Hunan' trials.

Not sure why Shimpo-san is sitting on my lap!

A 2009 picture of The Ancient Mariner & Boss on a mountain in BC with "George". The bridge was originally the CPR rail track on trestles through the mountains west of the Rockies. Dig the ancient cap badge!
